When you are preparing for a high altitude trek such as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, one thing that is as tricky as the trek itself is packing for it! Even though there are several comprehensive lists (of the items to pack) that are available online, the requirements are never the same for everyone.
Since different people have different needs, their packing requirements are different too. But it is always a great help to have a checklist that you can refer to.
So here is a list of items you must carry to the legendary Kailash Mansarovar Trek.
Clothes and Accessories
- 2 thermals (inners)
- 3 pairs of casuals (preferably quick dry)
- 2 lower (preferably cargos or cotton pants)
- 1 pair of warm trousers
- 4 to 5 T-shirts
- 1 down jacket or insulated jacket to keep you warm
- 1 warm pullover
- 2 sweatshirts
- 1 bathing towel
- 5 sets of undergarments
- 1 plastic liner to carry all your used and soiled clothes
Accessories
- 1 pair of warm gloves
- 2 pairs of regular socks
- 1 pair of long, trekking, woolen socks (for Parikrama days)
- 1 monkey cap
- 1 dust mask
- 1 muffler
- 1 pair of sunglasses (with UV protection)
Toiletries
- Hand wash (anti-bacterial)
- Paper soap
- Wet wipes
- Toilet roll
- Tooth paste and tooth brush
- A good moisturizer
- Lip balm
- Sunscreen with SPF 35
- Soap
- Comb/hair brush
- Shaving kit (for men)
- Sanitary napkins (for women)
Medicines
Always carry all your usual medicines without fail. Some of the other medicines you must carry include:
- Diamox for AMS
- 2-3 packets of dehydration salts such as Electrolytes
- Anti-diarrhea tablets
- Paracetamol
- A Balm or a spray for muscle/joint pain
- A complete course of antibiotics
- A first-aid kit
Apart from all the above mentioned requirements, here are a few more things you must keep handy at all times while on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by Helicopter:
- 1 metal bottle to carry drinking water (you can also choose one that purifies water)
- An extra bottle to carry back the holy waters of Mansarovar Lake
- Trekking poles
- 1 pair of good quality trekking shoes (waterproof)
- Camera, extra batteries, SD cards and international adapter
- Dry snacks such as protein bars, dry fruits, chocolates and candies
The Kailash Mansarovar Trek takes you to an incredible height of 18,000 feet and above. It is not just necessary to be medically fit but also to feel comfortable and in control of your body and emotions at all times.
While we have tried to make a note of every minute requirement that can arise on the trek, there can be several items that can be easily excluded by few. Just on the other hand, there can be a few things that you might feel like over-packing for yourself, depending on your use and needs.
The above mentioned packing list is fit for anyone going for the Kailash Mansarovar Trek, irrespective of the age or the gender. It is advisable to leave all your unnecessary items at Kathmandu itself. Trekking light and comfortable is the number one rule for a successful trek. You can choose between a comfortable backpack and a duffle bag to store all your necessary items for the trek ahead.
