So you're available to offload your used phone for a new one.

The number of cash or credit you can receive for a phone differs widely by the type, age and situation. Trade-ins usually top out at about $300 or $400 for a top-of-the-line thing, but a brand new iPhone could go for considerably more - that's among you and your buyer.

You get more funds if the phone is:

• In good shape
• Freshly, about 1 to 2 years old
• A premium material (rather than budget)
• Mass. iPhones and Samsung phones are in high interest.
• A favorite color (silver or black might net more than gold)
• Sold right to a buyer.

You won't be able to purchase in phones that are still being financed through your carrier.

1. Ere you sell, raid the closet

If you're going to pay in on one phone, you might as well see which other rusty, dusty electronics you ignored you had lying around in a drawer around: camera, phones, consoles and laptops, too.

2. Award: Cash, credit or trade-in

3. Know how you're going paid

Follow these extra steps before selling, recycling or giving your phone.

5. Never throw old telephones away
