An introduction to Motor Fleet Insurance
What is Fleet Insurance?
Motor Fleet insurance is designed for your business to easily insure multiple vehicles without having to administer separate policies for each vehicle.
One of the major aspects of motor fleet insurance is the any driver cover. This allows any of your employees, contractors or otherwise authorised persons to drive any of the vehicles on the policy as long as they have your permission and they meet the minimum age restriction on the policy that is agreed with the underwriters – such as any driver aged over 21 /over 25 / over 30.
Your business may have different types of vehicles - cars for your sales staff, vans for your light work or even HGVS. A fleet policy can cover all these on one policy.
Can I apply?
Motor Fleet policies cater for a wide range of occupations and trades. You may be a solicitor, insuring a fleet of prestige cars used to visit clients, a builder with a fleet of box vans and tippers for carrying materials or a manufacturer with a fleet of flat beds and HGV’s to deliver your products. As long as you run a business and have 2 or more vehicles you can apply for a Motor Fleet policy. (Motor Traders do not qualify for Motor Fleet policies as there are specialised products covering this occupation).
If you have never had a fleet policy before, some insurers will convert your individual No Claims Bonus from your previous vehicle policies onto a fleet rated policy. Once on a fleet policy, the vehicles will no longer earn any No Claims Bonus. Fleet policies are rated on Confirmed Claims Experience, which is a summary of the number of vehicles, the length of time they have been insured and the number / value of claims incurred.
More information
In addition to providing cover for you to use your vehicles in connection with your business, you can also cover your drivers for Social Domestic & Pleasure purposes. Some policies offer extensions of cover such as cover for damage and third party liability arising out of you or your employees moving a vehicle that is impeding your exit / access – this is called Unauthorised Movement cover. There are also add-ons available to include extra cover such a Breakdown recovery and/or safe driver schemes with telematics.
Most Motor Fleet policies do not cover any goods or tools within the vehicles. A separate carriage of goods policy would need to be considered if you want these items covering.
A fleet policy is vehicle rated, this means the more vehicles you add onto your policy the more expensive it will become. The rate for each vehicle may differ depending upon the type of vehicle you insure.
As with all insurance, it is important to read your policy documents to have a full understanding of the cover provided by your specific policy.
