What is knee joint replacement?

Knee joint replacement is a surgery that involves replacing the damaged knee joint with manmade artificial joint or prosthesis

The artificial knee joint replacement (prosthesis) is made by metal alloys, polymers, and plastics. The artificial joint takes the function of an original knee. In a knee replacement surgery, the doctor needs to understand various factors about the patient for surgery.

  • Age factor is most important
  • Health-related issue (diabetics, blood pressure, etc.)
  • Weight of patient for prosthesis
  • Daily activity level

For removing old knee and replacing it with the artificial knee (prosthesis) nearly takes two hours, but recovery after knee joint replacement surgery can take one to two months for regular activities like proper standing and walking.

Knee replacement is a common surgery over the age of 50. Knee arthroplasty is another name for knee joint replacement surgery. According to estimates near about 1,20,000 knee replacement procedures, take place every year in India.

What is the purpose of a knee joint replacement?

Joint replacement surgery is required due to damaged or injured Cartilage. Friction between the joints is the main reason for the Cartilage deterioration. Cartilage is a rubber-like material that covers the end sides of the knee bone. So to remove this damaged cartilage and bone, knee joint replacement surgery is performed.

Traditional Knee Replacement vs. robotically knee joint replacement surgeryTraditional Knee Replacement

For performing traditional knee replacement surgery, the surgeon makes an 8- to 10-inch vertical incision on the front of the knee to replace the damaged joint. The surgeon will then:

  • First damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the knee
  • Then removed cartilage and bone are replaced with artificial metal components or prosthetic.
  • Kneecap or undersurface of the patella is cut and for resurfacing surgeon ads the plastic button or some surgeons avoid this procedure depends on some conditions of a patient
  • For creating a smooth gliding surface plastic spacer is inserted between the metal components.

Robotically assisted knee joint replacement

In knee replacement surgery, damaged portion i.e. cartilage and bone of the knee are removed and covered with an artificial joint which is made by plastic and metal parts for new surfaces of the knee joint. But in robotic total knee replacement surgery, the surgeon uses the CT scans (computed tomography) for building a virtual model for knee joint replacement surgery. The surgeon uses the robotic arm to implant the components of the new knee precisely and accurately.

Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Total Knee Replacement
  • More accurate for implantation of artificial component,
  • exact incisions and angles can be targeted
  • Safe and reduced risk of injury
  • Small incisions help quicker recovery
  • Shorter hospitalization
  • Less pain
