GAME of Thrones actor JJ Murphy has collapsed and died, just four days after shooting his first scenes.

Murphy was 86. The Northern Ireland actor had recently been cast in the role of Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch in the television adaptation of George RR Martin’s enormously popular A Song of Ice and Fire books.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Murphy had filmed some scenes during the season’s first four days of shooting, and was due to film more.

Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and DB Weiss released a statement, saying they would not be recasting Murphy’s role. "He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended."

Murphy had told friends he was excited to be working on the new season.

Murphy also had a role in the big budget Dracula Untold film, shot in Northern Ireland, but was best known as a theatre actor, having worked for many years at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.

There he assisted in refining the crafts of distinguished actors, including Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds, the Independent reports.
