Have an Unforgettable Surfing Experience at Newport Beach
Known for consistent swells during the summer months, with warm water and playful waves all season- Newport Beach is a popular and fun place to learn how to surf. Its reputation as a vacation paradise can be attributed to the pristine sandy beaches, ocean activities, nature preserves, world-class dining, shopping, and a thriving nightlife.
The Beach Scene:
Newport Beach offers exceptional swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. Newport Beach is a symbol of California surf culture, and rightly so. If you’re a surfer, there’s a good chance of Echo Beach, black ball, The Wedge, 54th Street, the surf industry, or Richie Collins coming to your mind when you think of Newport Beach.
Newport Beach Surf Guide:
The Wedge- The Wedge is one of Orange County’s most famous spots for witnessing monstrous surf- it’s a 20-foot-plus meat grinder dreamed up by the devil himself that heaves, bends and pulverizes in ways that good little waves aren’t supposed to act. You may see bodyboarding or bodysurfing in action in the afternoons here rather than surfing because of the black ball flag (no surfing), making it a hotbed of the most skilled bodysurfers in all of Newport Beach.
The Wedge, with some of the biggest swell in Southern California is definitely a must-see when you visit Newport Beach. Don’t forget to take your camera to this hot spot to catch a video of the impressive sets. The summer and the fall seasons are the best times of year to catch higher surf and experience the shore-breaking waves at The Wedge Newport Beach.
The best part is you don’t have to brave the waves to enjoy it, you can always closely view some of the beautiful oceanfront homes right on the sand, or you can spend time sitting at the jetty and watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. For the locals, The Wedge Newport Beach is also a premier spot to catch the sunset and watch that mesmerizing orange orb melt into the Pacific Ocean. Given how awe-inspiring the Wedge can be, just down the beach Newport Beach surf lessons are a must.
Corona Del Mar- For most traditional surfers, The Wedge is considered too raucous most of the year. Don’t lose heart as there are so many other options that a surfer can explore along Newport Beach’s eight-plus miles of coastline. Take Newport Beach’s Little Corona, for instance, which is south of the harbor entrance- a great beach for amateurs/beginners with waves seldom more than knee-high. During the winter months, northwest swells can produce perfect medium-sized waves that attract surfers of all abilities, including women with their kids, as well as older surfers who prefer longboards to a short stick.
54th/56th Streets- Further north, the beach between 52nd and 56th Streets, long known as Echo Beach, attracts serious professionals due to the shape of the waves (thanks to the string of jetties that break up the sand flow) that tends to be favorable for high-speed surfing.
36th Street-This is an amazing place for kids and average surfers in the summer. Stay prepared to encounter fun peaks/left walls in the area on big, closeout south swells. 36th can be fun with the winter’s west swells too. Additionally, there’s less crowd and it’s hardly competitive.
