8 Home Remedies for Pain Relief

Any accident, illness, or injury can cause a lot of pain at any point of time. If you can’t run to the hospital, your best bet is to try a few home remedies that can give you some relief. RICE – Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate

If you have any bruising or suffering from a minor sprain, you can find a lot of relief from this treatment. The first thing you need to do is ice the injury. Then you wrap it up with a bandage and put some pressure on it. If it is your leg or arm, keep it raised above your heart until your swelling comes down. Nevertheless, it is not a good idea to sit or stand in one place for long. Keep moving whenever you can.

Water

Cuts, scrapes and burns are best treated with water. Once you put the injured area in some cool water, make sure you cover the area with a cold compress. If you see any blisters or leaky fluid, if the wound turns brown, white, or black, or if you lose feeling in the area, you will have to seek medical help as soon as possible.

Multi-Purpose Washcloth

If you have a bag of frozen vegetables just wrap it up with a washcloth and use it as an ice pack. You can put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and use it if you don’t have the frozen vegetables bag. For infections such as cuts, boils or style, use a warm and damp cloth as a compress. Nevertheless, a cool one is always better if you have any itchiness along with the pain.

Over-the-Counter Anti-Inflammatories

If none of the above help in reducing your pain, you can try taking an aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, or any other medication that is available over the counter. However, make sure you don’t take too large doses for long term. This can lead to ulcers, high blood pressure, or kidney problems.

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen works well for toothaches, headaches, and menstrual cramps. It may not cause any problem if you take it occasionally. But if you take high doses, you can end up damaging your kidney or liver. Make it a point to talk to your doctor if you have any problem with any of your organs.

Topical Pain Relievers

You can try using pain relief sprays, gels, creams, or patches if you have pain in your joints, muscles or tendons. These are easily available over the counter and do not cause any side effects.

Hot Bath

A hot bath can be especially relaxing if you are suffering from joint pain or lower back pain. Make sure you set the temperature between 92 and 100 F. While lying in the tub make sure you give your body a stretch to improve blood circulation to the areas of pain.

Sitz Bath

A 20-minute sitz bath would be ideal for pain caused by open sores, hemorrhoids and fissures. It will give relief from irritation and itching also. Do these two or three times every day for faster relief.
