Throttle position sensor
The throttle position sensor is a variable resistor, which measures the direction of the throttle valve based on the throttle movement. It operates by moving along with the throttle shaft or spindle as it is attached or mounted on the throttle body, which is directly connected to the throttle shaft or spindle. The main purpose of this sensor is to provide information to the electronic control module, based on which the control module adjusts the fuel delivery to compensate for the throttle opening.
Vehicles also use information from the transmission position sensor to control the transmission shifting. The control module monitor's the changes in the transmission position sensor signal voltage through which it is able to determine the throttle angle & calculates fuel delivery. If your car is experiencing a fast idle condition then, the issue is related to the malfunctioning of the throttle position sensor.
Oxygen sensor
The oxygen sensor or the O2 sensor is located on the exhaust manifold. The O2 sensor is important for your car as because it is directly related to the exhaust system of the car. It helps the car in the combustion process by keeping a tab on the amount of unburned oxygen present in the exhaust system. When the oxygen sensor is heated it produces a voltage signal based on the ratio of the oxygen present in the exhaust system. If the oxygen content is high, it indicates a lean exhaust, which leads to a low voltage output from the O2 sensor.
Similarly, if the oxygen content is low it indicates to a rise in the exhaust, which results in a high voltage output from the sensor. The electronic control module gets the information from this voltage output so that it can deliver adequate fuel to maintain a precise air/fuel ratio. If the O2 sensor malfunctions then it will give erroneous voltage output, which can result in excess fuel being delivered to the engine & will adversely affect the fuel economy and vehicular emissions of your car.
Mass air flow sensor
The mass air flow sensor or the MAF sensor is an electrical sensor, which is integral to the functioning of the engine. The MAF sensor is located in the space between the engine & the air filter. The MAF sensor functions by calculating the amount of air that goes into the engine, in terms of volume & density. The MAF sensor is equipped with a mesh screen to break up air flow and prevent dirt & debris from entering the sensor. The electronic control module uses the information from the MAF sensor to calculate the fuel delivery.
Consequently, it uses a hot wire or a heated filament to calculate the volume & density of the air. When the reading is obtained, the MAF sensor sends a voltage signal to the control unit. The control unit then calculates the right amount of fuel needed to maintain the proper fuel mixture for any operating condition. If there are some issues with the MAF sensor then, you will experience rough idle, stalling and poor fuel economy while driving your car.
