Biological Safety Cabinets and Their Classifications

Author: Kewaunee Lab

A biosafety cabinet (BSC) is an important equipment in your lab, when dealing with harmful pathogens. An important piece of safety equipment in the laboratory, the Biological Safety Cabinet (BSCs) offers a containment environment, for working with infectious microorganisms.

BSCs are designed to provide both a clean work environment and protection for employees who work with biological hazards. Kewaunee’s Interceptor biological safety cabinets use vertical laminar airflow to create a barrier to airborne particles, like microorganisms as vertical laminar airflow provides protection for both the personnel and also the product.

Biological Safety Cabinets

Biosafety cabinet is clean room equipment that provides an enclosed, well-ventilated, and contamination-free area to conduct experiments and studies on potentially contagious biological samples and high-risk pathogens.

Biological laboratories need biological safety cabinets to prevent biological contamination for both user and the specimen. The cabinets are specially designed with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to act on air supply and exhaust systems.

Kewaunee biosafety cabinets are specifically designed for use with biological agents and the cabinet design standards are in accordance with NSF/ANSI Standard 49-2014 and UL 61010-1 Underwriters Laboratories Inc specifications. There are three types of biological safety cabinets depending on the protection to personnel, products, and environment.

Biosafety Cabinet Classifications

Three types of biological safety cabinets, designated as Class I, II, and III, have been developed to satisfy varying research and clinical needs. The biosafety cabinets are widely used in research and education organizations, biotechnology industries, defense research, agro-based industries, and even pharmaceutical industries. The biosafety cabinet finds applications in areas such as tissue culture, recombinant DNA technology experiments, pathology labs, and sterility testing.

Biosafety cabinets (BSCs) come in three classes. The higher the class of biosafety cabinet, the greater the protection to personnel, product, and the surrounding environment.

CLASS I Biosafety Cabinet: Provides personnel and environmental protection but no product protection.

CLASS II Biosafety Cabinet: Partial barrier systems relying on movement of air to provide protection for personnel, environment, and product.

CLASS III Biosafety Cabinet: A gas-tight enclosure providing the maximum protection for personnel, product, and environment.
