What is PMP certification and why is it important?

PMP stands for Project Management Professional which is a renowned qualification for project managers. This certificate is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). By adding a PMP certificate in your resume, you can harness a number of benefits some of which being promotions, salary hike, and job opportunities in international companies. All these benefits don’t come for free, however, and PMI has defined a very rigorous eligibility criteria and examination process. First of all, to be able to appear for the PMP exam, it is important that you fulfill some prerequisites. Let us take a look.

Eligibility criteria for appearing for the PMP examinations

There are two different groups for PMP Certification, their respective Prerequisites being:

Group A

This group is for those with a high school diploma or any other equivalent qualification. They must have taken a 35-hour project management course from any of the recognized institutes. They should also have experience of at least 7500 hours leading and directing projects.

Group B

This group consists of individuals with a 4-year bachelor's degree. They too need to have taken a 35-hours project management course from any of the institutes recognized by PMI. They should also have experience of at least 4500 hours leading and directing projects.

PMP Examination mode and question paper pattern

The PMP examination is an online mode examination with the exception of those locations which don’t have suitable computer centers, where the test is taken in pen-and-paper mode.

The question set consists of a total of 200 questions and you will be given a total 4 hours to solve them. All of these questions are single-correct type MCQs i.e. you will have to choose any one option out of the four choices. Out of these, 25 questions are pre-release ones and are not considered for evaluating your total score. You won’t know which of them are the non-scoring ones and hence, should try to attempt all of them. To qualify the exam, you must correct at least 141 questions which form about 81% of the 175 scoring questions. This also reminds that it is not that easy to make it to the PMP Certificate.

You will get your result immediately after the completion of the exam if you have appeared for the online mode. You also get a brief review of how you performed in various domains of project management. If you appeared for the offline-mode, however, it might take about 4 weeks before you can get your result.

Various domains that are included in the syllabus for the PMP exam and marks distribution

The questions that come in the PMP exams are distributed over a number of project management domains with a specific marks distribution. The domains and the marks distributed over them are-

  1. Initiating - 13%
  2. Planning - 24%
  3. Executing - 31%
  4. Monitoring and controlling - 25%

Conclusion

Though it is quite difficult to fulfill the prerequisites and then clear the PMP examination, it is more than worthy to invest the required time and efforts that PMP preparations demand. You will get a lot of benefits if you manage to earn the PMP Certificate. Even if you don’t, there is nothing to lose as the skills you’ll learn and the experience that you’ll gain will always pay you back. You should, however, choose project management training very carefully.
