All About Wooden Pallets

Author: Chen Balberan

From then until now, wooden pallets have been the way to transfer goods from one place to another. It has become one of the major packaging equipment in the supply chain industry, which has paved the way for multiple pallet variations across the globe. There are millions of pallets in use every day, and an estimate of more than 90% of them are made from wood.

So how does one company ensure that the pallets they use are of high quality and are safe to use?

The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA) has developed a set of guidelines to ensure that every pallet in the country that is used in shipping and storing goods is as safe as possible. In this set of guidelines, NWPCA describes how a wooden pallet should be manufactured, the necessary performance of the pallet, and how a wooden pallet should be sanitized.

How does TAWI comply with NWCPA’s set of guidelines?

TAWI pallets are made from high-quality materials in adherence to NWCPA’s guidelines. We make sure that every pallet we produce is above the minimum quality requirement for wooden pallets. Before launching any new product, we perform extensive research and multiple pallet testings (testing to destruction, load testing, maximum working load testing, and durability comparison testing) to ensure its high-performance level. TAWI pallets go through a set of treatments (like vacuum pressure treatment – insecticide and fungicide, kiln dry, ISPM15 heat treatment optional) that safeguard it from molds and pests.

What is a pallet?

According to Pallet Revolution, a "pallet, typically a form of tertiary packaging, is a flat structure used as a base for the unitization of goods in the supply chain." Pallets are used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling, and transporting goods as a unit load. Pallets are mainly used to stack, store, protect, and transport materials in the course of being handled by material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or conveyors, being stored in racking or bulk storage or being positioned in transport vehicles.

What Materials are Pallets Made from?

The supply chain industry is dominated by wooden pallets, followed by plastic pallets, paper pallets, wood composite, and metal pallets, respectively.

Why wooden pallets?

  1. Wooden pallets are about 3 times less expensive than plastic pallets.
  2. Wooden pallets are at least 10 times more widely used.
  3. They hold more weight than plastic and can be used for weight between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds.
  4. Can be easily repaired and reused
  5. Biodegradable – more environment-friendly
  6. Strong and durable
