There are a lot of factors to be kept in mind while moving into a new house or building. From choosing the right contractor to the ideal location with facilities nearby, different families have different aspects they look out for. While some pay attention to which direction the house is facing and consider the vaasthu of a house, others don’t move in unless their neighbours are friendly.

When so much thought goes into choosing a house to move into, imagine how much thought went into constructing that house! First, the constructors had to decide what purpose the building would fulfil (school/office/residential complex). Then, they would have to decide their budget and which suppliers they would invest in. This would then require them to approach the right sources for equipment and supplies. And all this is before the actual construction even begins!

Keeping all these factors in mind, the foundation of any stable structure is the choice of steel TMT bar for construction. The strength of the TMT bar is reflected in the strength of the structure. This makes choosing the right TMT bar for any construction of paramount importance.

Ask yourself the basic questions

It is always a good idea to slow down for a moment and ask yourself some basic questions before getting started. What is the purpose of your structure? Who and how many people will live in it? Where are you building it and how tall should it be? What are your priorities when choosing a TMT bar? For example: Are you in a sensitive geographical area and need steel bars with high ductility or are you more particular about malleability and bendability?

Asking yourself these questions beforehand make it easier to sketch out a budget and meet manufacturers who have products that meet your specific requirements.

Basic tests for credibility

When it comes to any long-term commitment, repeat the same mantra – Research, research, research. Research about the company, its official logo, its presence on online platforms and social media, testimonials from earlier clients and other signs of credibility. If you know any personal contacts who have invested in the brand or have worked in the company, discuss how their experience were with them.

There have been occasions where fake companies impersonate top brands and create fake profiles online to dupe customers. It is very simple to create a fake profile, especially on social media and simply edit the official logo or make variations in the brand name. Be sure to verify all the details you can find and how notice confident the manufacturer is with their products.

Also compare products with other companies to ensure their freshness and procurement options. It is a good idea to choose companies close to your construction site so as to quickly get supplies delivered in case of emergencies.

Check the certification

It isn’t rare that a TMT bar manufacturer has flaunted superior quality steel bars but delivered ones of very low quality. There have also been occasions where the manufacturer has denied guarantees and warrantees offered during purchase and denied any responsibility when things go wrong.

It is always best to check for the ISO, BIS, ISI and other certifications available prior to purchasing. It goes without saying that you need to compare these between different companies. The more transparent a company is with their standards and safety, the more confident you can be while trusting them.

Check the grades and compare qualities

The grade of a TMT bar speaks high volumes about how much load it can withstand or how rust-free and non-corrosive it can be. It also reinforces the company’s claims of durability, ductility, malleability and so on. Some popular grades in India include Fe500D, Fe600, Fe500SD, etc.

Although higher graded are preferred, some factors like ductility decrease with higher strength. This is why deciding exactly what purpose your structure is going to serve is important, as you can then decide where to build it. For example: Earthquake prone regions will be unsuitable for steel bars with low ductility.

Be ready with the specifics

It is always best to make informed decisions. Be it how much equipment you need to procure, or exactly how far it needs to be transported, ensure you know and communicate all the specifications. Be clear about the measurements (length of TMT bars required, dimensions like width and thickness, etc.). Don’t be hesitant to approach experts and ask for advice if you are unable to make informed decisions. After all, the fact that people are going to live in the building you construct makes you responsible for so many lives. Don’t endanger their trust.

Stay up to date with trends

Although steel manufacturing is a whole other industry and learning the nitty-gritty details about it will be hard, try to have basic knowledge on new products. Be in the know of different chemical compositions and speak to experts about which ones will suit your requirement. Know transport and procurement availabilities as per your budget and demand products in tune with latest advancements. Most importantly, have some clarity when it comes to obtaining high quality TMT bars from manufacturers who use cutting edge technology.
