What's the Best Cover for Your Phone Between Slim and Rugged?

Author: Cara Walsh

We all look forward to ‘new phone day’. We gingerly remove the device from the box - brand new and gleaming - marvelling at the extraordinary level of precise styling and design invested into it by teams of engineers.

Then, the inevitable question that faces every new phone owner:

Do I hide this beautiful device inside a rugged case that will protect it against almost anything or do I show off those sleek lines and great looks in a slimmer case that might not keep it as safe?

This is a question that more and more people are asking themselves everyday so let’s get on the case and examine the decision with Phone Cases Ireland in a little more detail.

Did you know?

Recent surveys have concluded that the average person takes their phone out 58 times during a 24hr period with over half of those being during work hours. The survey also revealed that just under a quarter of people in the UK have dropped and smashed their phone in the last two years.

No-one likes a falling out. Ultimately, only you will know exactly how much protection you are likely to need. Obviously, a quick check in the office or in a taxi is unlikely to result in a breakage but, if you work in a more ‘outdoorsy’ or physical industry, these environments are likely to be a little less forgiving when it comes to the odd clumsy moment.

So, it is prudent to consider – quite literally - worst ‘case’ scenarios. If you work on a building site or spend your day up a ladder or on a roof your phone is likely to need a little more robust protection than the phone of a librarian, for example. Expect the worst and it will help you prepare for the best!

Rugged Cases

The main thing to consider when choosing a rugged case is that, in general, the more protection the case provides, the more weight and overall bulk will be added.

These cases are designed to withstand anything and everything. They have reinforced edges and corner support and many features air-pocket technology which disperses the impact of dropping the phone through the sides and ends of the case.

The shells provide better grip, even in wet hands, and they are designed to prevent water and dust reaching the device. However, as we mentioned, this level of protection comes with certain drawbacks. These bulky rugged cases are a great deal more difficult to slip in and out of your pocket and their weight can begin to feel uncomfortable in a pocket all day.

Slim Phone Cases

These minimalist cases are designed to complement the overall aesthetic of your phone rather than detract from it. Like the rugged cases, these cases also have a trade-off – with these, what you lose in protection you make up for in the ability to show off and appreciate the device itself.

Also, with many of these cases being like a ‘second-skin’ for your phone, you can enjoy the complete functionality of the device as the manufacturer had intended. This ease of functionality is a benefit as, on occasion, the bulkier cases can make the on/off and volume buttons on the side of the device little inaccessible and harder to depress.

To be clear, however, just because one cannot drop their phone of the side of a building with confidence when it is in a slim case, this is not to say that these products provide no protection at all. The technology used in these cases is getting better every day and they certainly can guard against scratches and general wear and tear very effectively.

So, to show-off or to shield? The choice is yours!
