Author: Jason Roy

HP printers have always been highly regarded by consumers for their reliability and excellent performance. Like any other electronic device, the HP printer is not free from certain troubles and problems. Sometimes the HP ink system error can be misplaced, especially if you are using the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.

What Causes HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Printer Failure?

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer failure occurs because of a printing problem or incompatible ink cartridges. The HP 8600 uses HP 950 and 951 ink cartridges and using any other cartridge may cause the HP ink system to malfunction.

The HP OfficeJet pro 8600 printer error persists with many numbers and characters similar to the following: error 0x ******* a. This error message appears on the control panel of your computer or printer.

Fix the error with the HP ink system

To resolve an error with the HP printer ink system, try using the ink cartridges or printhead and other troubleshooting methods.

Restart the Printer

Sometimes a simple printer resets everything it takes to fix an HP ink system error.

  • Unplug the power cord from the printer while the machine is still on
  • Unplug the power cord
  • Wait 1 minute
  • Reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet and to the printer.
  • Make a test print to see if the error has been corrected

Use the Correct Ink or Toner Cartridges

Ink and toner cartridges are made for specific printer models, so always check that they are compatible with your machine before installing. They only work with their brands (HP ink cartridges only work with HP printers). You can use YoyoInk Ink and Toner Finder to determine the ink and toner cartridges that work with your printer based on your specific make and model.

Check the Ink/Toner Level of the HP Printer

The HP ink system error can be caused by low or empty toner or ink cartridges. If the message "Ink System Error" appears before you detect the error, replace the problem with the ink or toner cartridge.

Clear Paper Jams

Paper jams can also cause the HP ink system to fail. To troubleshoot a paper jam problem on your printer, watch the video below.

Clean the Printhead

If the HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer is still not working, you may want to examine the printhead. The printhead may not be installed properly or it may be clogged with dried or dirty ink. If so, cleaning the printhead can resolve the HP ink system error.

Replace the Printhead

If the HP ink system error persists after cleaning the printhead, replace it. Contact Hewlett-Packard customer support for a replacement printhead. HP will provide a new replacement along with cleaning supplies and a full set of new ink cartridges if the printhead is still under warranty. If your warranty has expired, you can order a new one from HP's online parts store.

Send the Printer in for Repair

Does the HP ink system error still show up even after trying all the above troubleshooting methods? Then it is best to repair the printer. If it is under warranty, feel free to contact HP assistant and send it back to check the technicians.
