Astrology and Astronomy, Are They So Very Different?
Astrology and astronomy have always existed throughout our existence on this earth. It was only relatively recently that these two ancient arts separated into two separate disciplines!
As astrology finds itself gaining traction in the modern world, astronomers would decry it. Often, some call the former a mere hocus pocus! But how did this trouble come to be? It is best to start by retelling the once intertwined stories of astrology and astronomy… How did Astrology and Astronomy come to be?
When man discovered mathematics and saw how it applied to the cosmos, astrology and astronomy came to being. There isn’t any definite date for this, but it is safe to say that the roots of both of these sciences came from the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and China.
As these civilizations entered the cycle of evolution, expansion, and fragmentation, so did Astrology and Astronomy. However, during this time, they were the same, with the terms interchanged freely.
Court astrologers calculated and interpreted the heavens’ movement concerning the events going on in their respective nations. For many of these cultures, to become an astrologer means holding the most up to date scientific knowledge and a large amount of political power.
Throughout millennia, astrology became even more refined as newer mathematical discoveries came to being. Yet, the Age of Enlightenment happened, enabling the "great schism" between astrology and astronomy. From that point on, things were never the same. Astrology was looked down on by academics, while Astrology was exalted for its precision and accuracy. No longer were these two seen as the same; instead, they’ve become each others’ opposites. What are the similarities and differences between Astrology and Astronomy?
The first thing anyone would notice os that these words have the same prefix: "astro-." This word refers to anything related to stars.
We can infer that these two concern themselves with things that relate to the heavens since that’s where stars are. But the difference couldn’t be more obvious.
The "-logy" suffix in Astrology means "the study of." In effect, this portrays astrology as "the study of the stars."
On the other hand, the "-nomy" in Astronomy means "the science/laws of." Therefore, Astronomy is "the science of the stars."
From there, we can draw connections to what they are all about. Astrology studies the heavens using mathematics and relates them to our lives here on earth; careers, love life, and personal struggles all fall under its jurisdiction.Astronomy looks into the more "science-y" side of things. While it also studies the cosmos, Astronomy is more interested in how the heavenly bodies themselves work to pursue greater knowledge that would benefit humanity.
Both of these arts are equally respectable and must be held in high esteem. In the end, these two unite under the same goal: to find ways to make humanity’s future better and brighter through looking into the unknown. Final Word
There is nothing wrong in believing in either one of Astrology and Astronomy. It’s even better if you subscribe to both!
The bottom line is that Astrology and Astronomy has contributed and will continue contributing to making our future better. Now, more than ever, we need both of their guidance to pull through all the challenges we face.
On a more philosophical note, Astrology and Astronomy remind us that our hope lies in moving forward and upward.
We may not pinpoint everything, especially on the cosmic scale. Yet, our optimism will allow us to find strength through these ancient arts that their discoveries will bring us closer with the entirety of the universe.
