Now known as one of the most flourishing cinema industries all across the globe, Indian Cinema started its journey in the late 1910s. Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, famously known as the Father of Indian cinema was the producer of Raja Harishchandra – the first Indian movie. The movie was released in the year 1913. Raja Harishchandra was a silent film, but the sound of the pioneering effort echoed all across the world. His initiative boosted the rise of various moviemakers in the country. By 1920, the Indian film industry was in full swing. It was producing more than 25 feature films annually.

The 1930s
This was the time when Indian cinema witnessed some revolutionary changes. People witnessed a major milestone in this era which was the release of ‘India's first talkie’ – 'Alam Ara’. The movie was directed and released by Ardeshir Irani in the year 1931. Also, the launch of 'talkies' brought an enormous amount of recognition to actors and especially singers and musicians. The decade also witnessed an upsurge of melody in the film industry which gave us some evergreen musicals.
The Golden Era (the 1940s-1960s)
The era after the end of British Raj is considered to be "The Golden Era" for filmmakers. During this time, parallel cinema came into existence. Bengali filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, and many more were the major contributors. However, this time was a turbulent period for India. The subcontinent was severely hit by the Great Depression, World War II, Freedom Movement and Indo-Pak partition calamities. Thus, the Pakistan and IndoPak partition and the related struggle became a hot topic for many filmmakers. The 1950s was one of the most valued periods for Indian cinema. The era was adorned with some of the most brilliant directors and artists that made an everlasting impact with their signature style.
The 2000s
This era witnessed revolutionary technological changes that gave birth to the modern Indian cinema. With special effects and animation, this time filmmaker took the Indian audience to places which were less peddled. While the industry is mostly inclined towards mass appeal, movies that ensure box-office success, there are quite a few filmmakers acknowledge demographic segmentation and also focus on special interest movies. Now, Indian cinema is competing on a global level and its advanced digital projectors and latest production techniques, it is one of the largest film producing industries in the world.
