How do you qualify for Immigration to Canada?

Author: Richard Peircess

It appears evident that to qualify for immigration to Canada, you have to face a host of requirements. The appropriate qualifications are important not just for scoring points on the CRS score calculator but also for the other programs like the Business Immigration Program, the Immigration Pilot Programs, and the Provincial Nominee Program.

Having the right qualifications is necessary for the IRCC (Immigration Refugee Citizenship Canada) to determine whether you are eligible for citizenship of Canada but also that whether your future employer can provide you a job based on your competency.

The Qualification Requirements for the Top Canadian Programs are:

  1. The Federal Skilled Worker Program- The minimum qualification is a secondary or a post-secondary qualification. Direct examples of such jobs include restaurant managers, mine managers, doctors, etc. The Federal Skilled Worker Program is designed keeping in mind that Skilled Workers are a valuable resource and they should be allowed to migrate in as little time as possible mostly within 6 months. They have to fetch an FSTP score of 67 out of 100, have a high school or post-school degree matching a highly skilled occupation to ones on the National Occupation System. This program is mostly for those who have an O, A, B skill type.

  2. The Federal Skilled Trade Program- The minimum qualifications are a secondary, post-secondary, or a certificate of qualification, examples of which qualification-holders include plumbers, butchers, electricians, bakers, chefs, etc. This program is a tool for those people who are qualified and have experience in trade jobs. You might need a Red Seal certificate to qualify for such jobs in certain provinces and others have a valid full-time job offer and two years of work experience in the respective trade.

  3. Canada Experience Class- The Canada Experience Class consists of those people who have minimum experience same as the above two classes but examples of qualifying people are managers, architects, shore captains, tech professionals, etc. The Canada experience class was created to help highly skilled workers at NOC levels O, A, B with relevant Canada experience of two years easily migrate to Canada.

  4. Provincial Nominee Program- The Provincial Nominee Program consists of a dependency on stream and province/territory. Examples of such qualifications include long haul truck driver, food and beverage server, fruit picker, oil field worker, etc. Eleven out of Canada’s provinces and territories each have their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP’s) each with their requirements and job opportunities in Canada. Besides fulfilling the requirements of the Canada Permanent Resident ship Application, you also need to think about the individual requirements of the job opportunities of the provinces that you would be applying to and how they can be arranged through the Express Entry process. The process through the PNP’s takes a long time because you might have to apply on paper. The only exception is the British Columbia Nomination Program which can process your application in 2-3 months also.

  5. The Atlantic Immigration Program- The minimum qualifications of the Atlantic Immigration Program is dependent on the stream but examples of qualifying professions include shore captain, industrial butcher, long haul truck driver, etc. For the joys of small-town coastal living, settle down in the communities of Atlantic Canada. This program aims to fill the current labor gap in the four Atlantic Maritime Communities of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. There are 3 different streams each with its qualification criteria.
