Appreciating the Unique Appeal of Amsterdam

Author: Lisa Jeeves

As far as European countries go, The Netherlands is one of the most unique and personable you could find - and nowhere is this more evident than in its distinctive and vibrant capital city. Mixing a little of the sophistication of Paris and London with the laid-back, unstuffy nature of somewhere like Barcelona, it is little wonder Amsterdam (and, ultimately, The Netherlands as a whole) has become a preferred destination for backpackers and tourists. It offers the visitor an affordable and relaxing holiday with all the required elements of art, culture, history, wonderful cuisine and, of course, plenty of fun.

Foreigners visiting the Dutch capital will find very little in the way of showiness. This is not to say that the city is entirely devoid of luxury or style – much to the contrary, in fact. However, much like the Dutch people themselves, it prefers not to flaunt its riches and sophistication, instead adopting a self-effacing attitude, which is quite charming in its own right. This unassuming posture shines through in a number of ways, the most notable of which are probably the predominance of bicycles over cars in the streets of the city, and the diversity and quality of Amsterdam hostels as compared to luxury hotels.

A Unique Ambience

Even in the large and decidedly tourist-oriented capital city, the Dutch residents are friendly, open-minded and very willing to help – a stark contrast to the attitude found in many other large European capitals. This warm, understated quality extends to the ambience of the excellent Amsterdam hostels as well, and they are friendly and welcoming in terms of both the staff and surrounds. Well facilitated and comfortable, many of them are centrally located, giving guests wonderful views over the canals and charming city streets – one is even situated within the lush surrounds of the famous Vondelpark. They are also positioned to take full advantage of the opportunity to walk or cycle to access the city's main sights and attractions. As a worthy, far more affordable and equally well-located alternative to a hotel, it's little wonder Amsterdam hostels find favour with such a wide demographic of travellers.

The Netherlands has a unique charm to offer the adventurous traveller. With a wide range of attractions – including the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the canals and Vondelpark to name just a few - excellent Amsterdam hostels in which to make a central base, a host of art, history and culture all its own, and a glorious landscape of vibrant colour and texture, this small but perfectly formed country is a high point on any European travel itinerary.
