A Kamarband is also known by the names Kardhani, Kamarpatta, waist chain, and belly chain. This chain or band is worn around the waist by women. The Kamarband can be of elaborate design made of thick bands, or it can be a lightweight, thin chain worn around the belly.

It is also known as Udiyanam in South India. This is made of an inch thick silver with a clasp around the waist. At the centre, there is a pendant that could be embellished with diamond or precious stones. It is one of the essential pieces of bridal jewellery in India.

Kamarband In Different Regions Of India

Since India is a diverse country with every region having its own culture, the jewellery is also widely different. In Andhra Pradesh & Odisha, ornamental work (filigree) is done, which develops the shapes of plants and animals. Kundan and Meenakari work are famous in Rajput, the land of royalty. In northern states, the tribe plays a significant influence on the designs. Assam has natural motifs and local flora.

Kamarband for Women

Kamarband is an important accessory in adorning married women as it is one of the elements of Solah Shringaar. The Kamarband is mostly made of precious metals like gold or silver, which symbolize the goddess Lakshmi. In earlier times, this was used to make a woman attractive by enhancing her figure. Being made of silver also helps to keep your body healthy and protect you from evil eyes and negative energy.

This Kamarband is a sign of marital status, but unmarried girls also wear them for being fashionable. And the Indian wedding is almost impossible without the bride flaunting this magnificent gold or silver Kamarband.

Kamarband in Dancing

The cultural activities of India are also diverse, and one of the most loved activities is cultural and traditional dancing. Kathak or Bharatnatyam dancers can be frequently seen wearing waist belts. These Kamarbands are with different designs.
