Plumbing tips for your home

Plumbing system problems can be a real headache. Read on to know 5 tips to keep your plumbing system efficiently running.

Tip 1: Take note of the location of your main water shut-off valve.

Getting the supply turned off is the first thing you should do when you encounter a water emergency. Running water can cause extensive damage and can happen very quickly. You can turn it off by hand so make sure your family knows where it is and how to turn it off should the need arise.

Most of the time, the shutoff valve is located close to your water meter. Normally, it is found in the water meter box itself, it has a green lid and a black box. Otherwise, the shutoff valve can be found in walls or under laundry sinks in units or it can be under steel checker plates in the driveway.

Among all the plumbing tips we’ll give you, this tip should be on top of your list.

Tip 2: Do a yearly checkup on your water heater.

Sediments form in the bottom of your water heater over time. This sediment is often composed of burnt-off metals from the heating element or the steel storage tank itself and minerals such as calcium carbonate if your water comes through a municipal source. Your heater will work less efficiently if the sediment has already formed.

Make sure to check the date on your water heater when you’re doing the inspection. A heater that’s already 12-15 years old should be replaced. On the other hand, signs of rust could be a problem so it’s best to consult a licensed plumber to handle this.

Tip 3: Check for damages on your flexible hoses for basins, washing machines, toilets, and kitchen sinks.

Old hoses can develop splits and can cause large water leaks. Make sure to check them regularly because some splits can go unnoticed for weeks, months, or even years. They start by just looking like a stain on the hose which means it needs to be replaced asap before it splits and causes water damage to the property.

Pay close attention to the shutoff valve especially if you’re replacing the hose. It may develop a small leak after you install a new hose.

Tip 4: Stop drips in the sink by getting the taps/mixers serviced.

Drips in the sink are caused by damaged or deteriorated rubber washers. Replace your old rubber washers with a new one for a simple repair. This can save you money on your water bill.

Tip 5: Regularly turn your shut-off valves on and off.

Shut-off valves are only used when you have plumbing emergencies where you need to turn off the water supply for some reason. Because of this, it could be very difficult to turn the knobs of the valves. Turning the knobs could take a long time, so you’ll find yourself flooded with water if a plumbing emergency happens.

Regularly turning the shut-off valves can keep them from sticking. At the same time, make sure your toilet and pipes under your sink have no leaks while you do this.
