Author: Lisa Jeeves

Rome, "the Eternal City", never sleeps. The hustle and bustle of everyday life in Italy’s capital continues well past dusk and on into a buzzing nightlife. One of the key pieces of advice given to travellers is to avoid driving at all costs, due to the city’s high traffic volume and notoriously confusing road laws. Consequently, one of the most important factors to consider prior to a visit (especially with children in tow) is the location of your family hotel. Rome, and its myriad children-friendly attractions are best experienced on foot - so easy access and a convenient location is everything when it comes to younger children.

Access to the Best Sights

There are certain factors to consider when choosing the most ideally located family hotel. Rome, has numerous must-see attractions like the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter’s Basilica to name but a few, and if you have younger (or less willing) children with you, you may need to access these by taxi or public transport. However, for a truly authentic Roman experience you should take every opportunity to take your children off the beaten tourist path to experience the city's hidden and understated gems.

Consider Staying Just Outside the Excitement

One particularly lovely part of town is the historic district of Trastevere and this is an excellent place to book in to a convenient family hotel. Rome is exciting both by day and night and Trastevere has a vibrant nightlife – the type suitable even for youngsters! It is perhaps at night when location and walkability is paramount and Trastevere offers many wonderful family-friendly dining establishments within walking distance, minimising concern for navigating unknown terrain at night with children

Off the Beaten Track

Some of the best recommendations for things to do in the city are not always in the guidebooks and may come from more authoritative local sources. Simple pleasures such as sampling gelato while exploring the romantic streets of Trastevere, or taking in the sunset at Giardino degli Aranci will offer a more authentic Roman experience that will create truly lasting memories.

Although easy access to the pleasures of the city is desirable, choosing an accommodation location should also be about finding an oasis of calm amidst the excitement. With children in mind, in this regard Trastevere is again an ideal location for a luxurious and calming family hotel. Rome will prove both exhilarating and exhausting for young travellers, so it is wise to have a haven from the fray to will offer the opportunity to rejuvenate and recover in preparation for the next day’s adventures.
