Is reading habit on a decline?

Author: Harsimran Kaur

It’s great to see the literacy rates increasing all over the world, but this does not tantamount to an upsurge in the reading capacity of people. Books, once considered as "best friends" are now a bystander waiting to be picked up by the emollient hands of the readers. The pressure of academics and use of gadgets has predisposed children and adults to slay away from leisure reading.

Competition is massive. Schools follow in intensive curriculum with projects and activities due to which children have less time to devout to reading. Adults under the colossal pressure of meeting deadlines and outstripping their competitors get involved in political chicanery, having less time to read. It depends on perceptions as well. Parents want children to be academically brilliant to be able to secure good jobs in future. They fail to encourage their kids to inculcate the habit or reading fiction/non-fiction books. On the radar are the middle-class family, who because of their insecurities feel academics is the end of the life. Reading other books can take a back seat for its non-credence in earning money. On the flip side, even if parents make an effort, children tend to give it a lame leg because of paucity of time and more interesting alternatives available.

But that’s not how things need to work! In spite of all these odds, we need to even out the time for reading books. It not always about knowledge but about enlightenment too! Reading books on varied subjects induces creativity and reasoning. All this also helps in our academics as we become more flamboyant in expressing ourselves. Because so many young people are averse to reading, their creative and imaginative faculties are less developed and enhanced. If we look at the works of some of the eminent scientist, their first step in the discovery or invention of anything new began with imagination. They had a vision to bring forth a new asset to life. Imagination comes through reading as it takes to a different world bereft of our living egos and nuances. Great works have not been possible without reason and the marvel of reading and comprehending. When Jules Verne wrote his novels and talked about helicopters and submarines in them, he was the laughing stock for the society. He was mocked for his ideas, for his imagination. Look at the world now! Helicopters and submarines are some of our most sought after resources in case of emergencies and battles.

There was a time when libraries saw a swam of people finding respite from the ennui of life in the magical tales. It helped them grow and understand life. People today look confused about life and its predicaments. Today, libraries are empty. People used to keep track of authors and their new presentations, but today we lock horns with social media and gadgets, and authors have hidden behind the curtains. Books help to form perceptions and beliefs from all angles of life, thus enabling one to outgrow the mediocrity of prejudices and fixed notions. And we don’t realize the impact of the decline or even how much decline has occurred.

In a nutshell, books can open you to a whole new world. Without them, you are limiting yourself.
