The Reasons and Reality of Infidelity
Infidelity…. Unfaithfulness…. If we watch any talk show, listen to psychiatrists, doctors and sociologists, follow up on celebrities’ news; cheating and being cheated on is a "talk of a town". Why we as a society are so fixated on it? Why do we have a tendency to understand and somehow explain and accept all faults and immorality of human nature: angriness, laziness, inability to control many urges and everything else but a longing to be fulfilled emotionally and physically? Somehow, society cannot admit and accept normality of craving a spark, excitement, connection and desire of passion. Even though the social order of civilized world understands that being human means not being perfect, infidelity is considered much more serious offense than other weaknesses and flows of human behavior. It is still a part of ‘seven deadly sins’…
According to Wikipedia, the term Seven Deadly Sins, has been known since early Christianity (325 B.C.), to educate and instruct followers concerning fallen humanity's tendency to sin. What is a Sin or Vice? It is a practice or a habit that is considered immoral, depraved, and/or degrading in the associated society. The currently recognized version of the list is usually given as wrath (anger), greed, sloth, pride, lust (lechery), envy, and gluttony. Lust is the only sin out of seven that is associated with sexual thoughts and feelings.
Lechery or lust (carnal "luxuria") is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. It is described as a lack of self control to fell into lustful passions of physical and sexual pleasure. That was a contrary to major believe that love to God was supposed to be a major love allowed and approved by religious foundation and social institution. If we look into history and Greek philosophy and methodology, Aristotle's view on lust was reflected as an excessive love of others, which therefore rendered love and devotion to God as secondary. Sexual intercourse (with or without physical pleasure and satisfaction), was allowed and accepted only as a necessary act of conception.
From 325 Before Christ (B.C.) to XXI century, have our views on lust as a deadly sin changed? Majority of people pledge to "love until death do us part" sincerely believing in keeping this promise. Is it realistic to keep feelings forever and not to fell in love or experience connection and being attracted to other people while being married?
In 1889 Famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who ranks not only as one of the world's great writers but rather as moral philosopher who studied and analyzed good and bad in relation to human life through his masterpieces, answered this question in his novella The Kreutzer Sonata: "To say that you can love one person all your life is just like saying that one candle will continue burning as long as you live".
