When buying a pair of laces, you would normally look at the shoes where the laces are going to fit. Is it a sneaker, specific sports shoes like cleats, office wear boots or terrain boots? Different shoes are chosen by individuals based on their needs. A footballer or cricketer would go for a cleat shoes and they need laces which can be knotted tightly on the shoes. The laces should not hang on the shoes touching the ground. So they should be short on length and also should have a good grip when tied. Similarly the sneaker laces are used on sneaker shoes.

A sneaker shoe is a shoe with rubber or synthetic soles with cotton or leather body. These shoes are very smooth on the walking surface and suppress the sound when the shoes touch the ground. The sneaker shoes have become hugely common with the new generation youth and people who lover walking and running alike. The laces for such sneaker shoes are chosen based on the comfortabililty of the wearer. With people who wear sneakers for a casual purpose go with lace knots being loose. While sneakers being used for running or playing basketball, has to have the knots tight. Sneaker laces with cotton material and broad surface have better grip rather than the silky and round surface. So these are put on the casual sneakers.

Similarly there are boots which are either a formal boot or casual boots e.g. army boots. However, these casual boots are made of cotton material or leather material, and they also are heavier than the sports shoes and thus also require well gripping laces to keep the feet tight on the shoes. There are also formal boots which comes with laces. Boots laces are very much a necessity for the formal look it gives to the shoes. These boots laces are small in length and are round to give it a lean look and also these laces are not tightly knotted. The numbers of holes through which these laces go are also less in number. There are slip-in shoes available on retail shops and online, which are dependent on the stretch provided by the leathers. But the rough terrain shoes used by trekkers and soldiers are having more number of holes. They have the laces pass through them and tie the knot tightly to keep them on the legs. Because of the heaviness on the shoes, if the feet are not tucked into the shoes tightly they might come off when being used.

The interesting thing about the sneaker laces and rough terrain shoe laces is that they can be exchanged and used in either of the shoes. These laces come with broad surface throughout its length. They are most of the time made of cotton or cotton missed materials. The ends are with bigger than normal sized plastic aglets and they hold the long laces tightly at both ends. The lace goes through a number of holes and preferably tied a in a knotty fashion. When you have to use a shoe, then buy laces to fit those shoes and make the shoe comfortable.
