+The Story
Makunouchi Ippo is a shy high school student; spending most of his days either in school or helping his overworked mother run the family fishing business, Ippo has never had much time for socializing, often spending his school days cowering under the bullying tactics of his peers.
A serious beating, one random day, leads Ippo into an encounter with a professional boxer who takes the injured young man to the Kamogawa gym. Owned by Genji Kamogawa, a retired boxer and renowned coach, Ippo is introduced to the world of boxing.
With names such as the boastful Mamoru Takamura by his side, Makunouchi Ippo comes to understand the hidden abilities that might be hidden behind his shy exterior.
Each new day brings new challenges and the path to professional boxing is fraught with physical pain and psychological torture; yet Ippo stands ready to push his way to the very top of the ring, and hopes to one day face off against Miyata, the most skillful boxer he has ever encountered and Ippo’s eternal rival.
Along the way he learns to accept the friendship of his fellow boxing comrades at the gym, doing his part to impel them towards their respective dreams, even as they stand ready to support his goals for total domination.
+The Author
The Hajime no Ippo Manga is the creaton of George Morikawa; born in January 1966 in Tokyo, Hajime no Ippo is George Morikawa’s longest and most successful creation. George Morikawa was primarily inspired to pursue life as a mangaka by Chiba Tetsuya, whose works he read religiously in elementary school.
The Matsubushi High School graduate has attested to getting into plenty of fights in high school, this including a scuffle with a student that had a gun. Life as a mangaka was anything but glorious.
All of Morikawa’s works were either rejected or cancelled before he could complete them, with Morikawa owing his success to the fact that his publishers were always willing to give him another chance at success.
The failure of George’s career as a mangaka was such that, because of the needs of his wife and child, he made the decision to quit if his next series was also met with cancellation; determining to follow his passion for the profession of boxing, he embarked on the Hajime no Ippo manga project in 1989.
George harbors a longstanding love for boxing, and played the role of corner man for Fukushima Manabu, the WBA Bantamweight Number one contender. The mangaka also owns a boxing gym.
The mangaka won the Kodansha award in 1991 for his work with Hajime no Ippo.
The Hajime no Ippo manga was adapted into a 76 episode anime series titled "The Fighting"; produced by Madhouse, the series run for two years, between 200 and 2002. Following a movie and an Ova, a second 26 episode anime series titled "The Fighting" was produced in 2009, the success of its run spawning a third series "Rising" debuting in 2013 and running for 25 episodes.
