Bend it like Beckham, Wrap it like West?

Author: Michel Evans

When it comes to celebrities putting their own personal spin on things, international soccer star David Beckham is unmatched. After all, he’s famous for his signature move of bending or curling the ball, making it almost impossible for goaltenders to track.

Beckham knows how to get noticed outside of sport as well. A luxury car enthusiast and Maserati brand ambassador, he incorporates personal details on his cars to make them really pop. Beckham just added a custom MC20 Fuoriserie Edition that’s wrapped in glossy black vinyl with pink accents.

It’s a nod to his ownership of the Inter Miami MLS team, tricked out in the team’s colours from the exterior wrap right down to the elaborate embroidered detailing inside. It featured in a television ad that had Beckham at the wheel tearing through the streets of Miami in the dark. No doubt, he gets noticed both on the field and off.

Barbie Girl

It probably won’t surprise you at all to know that Paris Hilton’s Bentley Continental GT is wrapped in bubble gum Barbie pink. The colour is synonymous with the starlet, after all.

It was originally wrapped by West Coast Customs, known for working with celebrity clients. Despite the fact that Hilton typically changes cars frequently, she’s been seen driving the same Bentley for over a decade and it’s still bubblegum pink.

Who knows why Hilton wants to drive a car that looks like it belongs to a plastic doll, but if you’re in the market for a wrap that will definitely stand out, then this could be a good option.

10,000

Justin Bieber’s contribution to the song 10,000 Hours helped make it a huge hit in 2021. He must like the number, since $10,000 is what he paid to have his Fisker Karma sports car entirely wrapped in chrome after receiving it as an 18th birthday gift on the Ellen Degeneres show.

No wonder he’s been pulled over for speeding in it. It’s essentially like driving around in a 3D reflective mirror, which is pretty hard to miss, especially if you’re over the limit. Avery Dennison’s line of chrome vinyl offers eight colour variations that can make your car look just like the Biebs’.

If this look isn’t your speed, Bieber’s other cars have included an Audi R8 decked out in leopard print and a Cadillac CTS V coupe that’s wrapped to look like the Batmobile. If you want to make sure the paparazzi can find you, there’s a lot of ideas to work with here.

Rhythm and blues

Singer-songwriter Chris Brown knew just how to make his LW Lamborghini Huracan sing. The R&B star didn’t shy away from a challenge when it came to choosing a vinyl wrap.

To get a result that virtually glows in the dark, he had installers use a 3-stage process with multiple layers of wraps. The finished product is a chromed, glowing, colour-flipping dazzler. It combines turquoise, pink, purple and orange in a way that definitely turns up the volume.

3M makes a line of reflective wraps that promise to help you shine brighter, if star power is what you’re after.

Hello, kitty

Here’s an unexpected combination: former NFLer and Hello Kitty. That’s right, Antonio Garay’s little red smart car is plastered with Hello Kitty decals on the doors.

It’s an unusual choice that’s made the list for ugly cars driven by athletes, but it’s a great example of how vinyl anime decals can really change the look of your car … if that’s what you want.

No Joking Matter

Maybe these outrageous celebrity car wraps aren’t really your style. If you’re looking for some serious protection from scuffs, scratches and paint chips that’s a bit more muted, take a cue from comedian Jay Leno’s Ford GT.

His 2017 model is a glossy black carbon fiber car with orange racing stripes. He trusted Protective Film Solutions to wrap it in a clear vinyl protective wrap without altering the aesthetics of the custom paint job.

While the wrap is essentially invisible, it gives his car excellent protection from damage, including preventing rocks from chipping the paint. He even had the windshield wrapped for an extra layer of protection.

Of course, most of us don’t have a custom paint job to protect, but a paint protection film is great for any car. It not only prevents scratches and chips but also prevents damage from UV rays that can fade your colour. Ideally, you’ll want to have it installed as soon as possible when it’s brand new. Check out XPEL’s line of self-healing paint protection films, including gloss and satin options.

Wrap it like West

Considering his notoriety, Kanye West drives a Lamborghini Urus with a surprisingly low-key wrap. His Super Sport Utility Vehicle is done up in matte tan vinyl, combining a gloss light ivory with a matte overlaminate.

This sounds remarkably normal for the outspoken hip hop star with some controversial views. We think most drivers could get on board with the idea of a wrap that offers lots of protection and a unique colour option without being overly flamboyant.

Get the look

Celebrities have long been a driving force in fashion trends and it looks like their choice in car wraps might have some influence over how we want our cars to look, as well.

While it’s true that some of these cars may seem a bit over the top, the vinyl wrap industry is exploding, in large part because drivers want to make their vehicles stand out. Bright colours, interesting graphics, reflective details, and unexpected finishes are all having a heyday in the world of vinyl wraps.
