Choose the Right Material

The first step in selecting your deer fence is to choose the material. The most popular materials are poly (polypropylene plastic) and metal. Poly fences are long-lasting, lightweight, and simple to set up while still providing adequate security. Trident and Tenax are two brands that produce poly deer barriers. Trident fences are also used to keep deer out of your garden since they have stronger weaving around the bottom. Tenax is a popular choice due on the grounds that it is less visible from a distance. Metal fencing, specifically galvanized wire, offers a more durable protection and resistance to any chewing. Metal has its own set of drawbacks, including increased cost and weight.

Size

The first step to building a deer fence is knowing the size you need. Any material can be cut down to your desired dimensions, and both polyester and metal come in different strength levels. The two most common heights for fences are 6 feet and 7.5 feet, but which one you should choose depends on what type of plants you grow, as well as how many deer live in your area.

Posts and Gates

Deer fences may be made of wood or wire. If you're planning to build a fence on your property, you'll have to decide what sort of posts and gates you'll use. Heavy line posts are the most popular because they are simple to install, provide robust support, and look nice. Angle steel posts are commonly used for temporary fences because they offer good strength and appear nicer than line steel posts (angle iron). To install angle steel posts, you need a post driver. Heavy line posts are installed with ground sleeves, so there is no digging required. Depending on where the fencing will be located, different types of gates may be necessary. For example, if it is just around a garden area then an access gate likely suffice. However, for larger areas like farms or other extensive properties, driveway gates which allow automobiles and tractors through may be preferred.

Installation Products

A corner or end system is an important addition to your fence installation, especially if you plan on having a fence that's longer than 100 feet. These systems add more support and stability to the structure, which will help in the long run. Fences that border a building would require end systems. You might also want to consider using drive caps, ground stakes, tensioning, and self-locking ties for an even more secure fence construction.

Kits or piecemeal purchases may be made when purchasing your fence components. Deer fence kits include everything you need to create a basic fenced-in space, including all of the materials for installation. If you want a no-fuss experience, then purchasing a kit is the way to go. Kits come with everything you need for installation and they are available for both poly and metal fences. They can be great if your project is on the smaller side, but more complex fencing jobs might require additional materials not found in these kits.
