What is a Crane Hook?

A crane hook is a point of attachment on a crane designed to connect chains and ropes attached to loads like crates, construction beams and machinery. Hooks come in a variety of styles to meet various needs and like other parts of the crane, they are rated for loads of specific size and type. It is important to avoid using an underrated hook, as this could result in damage to the crane or loss of the load.

Cranes allow people to move materials horizontally, as well as vertically. They vary in size from truck-mounted cranes used at work sites to massive equipment designed to move shipping containers in ports. Hooks are a preferred method of load connection, as they are easy to use and they can be secured with locks easily. What is a hook block?

The hoist is the primary mechanism on the crane. It provides the lifting and lowering ability for the load. The load is attached to the hoist via the hook block. A hook block consists of a hook, swivel bearing and a number of sheaves through which the hoist cable runs.

The swivel bearing supports the hook, allowing it to turn freely and ensuring the hook can be secured to the lifting device load without twisting the lifting ropes or cables. Lifting devices are attached to the crane hook to assist in securely attaching the load to the crane. The lifting device used is determined by the shape of the load. Lifting devices include magnets, grabs, slings, buckets and hooked chains.

Not all hook blocks are manufactured in the same way. Each manufacturer has his own unique way of designing and building their blocks. Some hook blocks are designed to leave the bearing fully exposed, others provide a shielding for the bearing to keep the contaminants away.
