Neuroendoscopy Market, By Type (Rigid Neuroendoscopy, Flexible Neuroendoscopy), By Application (Transnasal, Transcranial, Intraventricular, and Others), By End-Users (Hospitals, Specialty Clinics, Ambulatory Surgical Centers, and Others), and By Region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa) - Trends, Analysis and Forecast till 2032"
Endoscope was first used in neurosurgical practice by Victor Lespinase before 1913 to treat hydrocephalus. Fundamental equipment include in neuroendoscopy are light source, endoscope, endoscopy tailored instruments and camera with display monitor. Rod lens and fiber-optic are two main types in endoscope. Image produced by former is transmitted by series of lenses and later transmitted through fiber-optic cable. Fiber-optic endoscopes are flexible and rod lens endoscopes are rigid. Rod lens endoscopes are easily & safely employed and provides better images than fiberscopes. Depending on specific purpose of endoscope it may be held by an assistant, primary surgeon or with mechanical device within operation. Final distinction is made between coaxial & non-coaxial endoscopy. Microscope has revolutionized the field of skull base surgery owing to previously unparalleled ability of illuminating and magnifying. Endoscopy has natural advantage as it provides angulated view within narrow line of approach with up close perspective of surgical target under the full illumination. Neuroendoscopy in management of colloid cysts and intra-ventricular tumors is expanding widely. Endoscope provides extended range of view which is not seen with microscopy and also become a useful adjunct for confirming the completeness of microscopic resection. Neuroendoscopy is used in treating hydrocephalus, to biopsy tumors and in resecting selected tumors. Due to technical advancement in optical systems, availability of improved instrumentation, better image quality, more tumors are operated on endoscopically. Colloid cysts are most often treated by endoscopy. Neuroendoscopy is performed in cases of hypothalamic hamartomas, obstructive hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, various intra-ventricular lesions, spinal lesions and skull base tumors. Neuroendoscopy is explored for complicated forms of hydrocephalus. Septostomy can be performed endoscopically for treating isolated lateral ventricles. Endoscopic procedure includes, tumor biopsy, cyst fenestration, metastatic disease assessment and tumor removal. Endoscopic tumor biopsy has become well established method for intra-ventricular brain tumors as it has low risk (90%). However, rising prevalence of neurological diseases and technological advancement has fueled the market growth.
Key Highlights:
- In December 2018, KARL STORZ has launched new 4mm Endoscopic NIR/ICG Fluorescence Imaging System for enhancing minimally invasive neurosurgery. Newly launched NIR/ICG Fluorescence Imaging System will help in enabling the live visualization of structural landmarks beneath the surface of tissue with no latency by using NIR (near infrared imaging) for detection of indocyanine green (ICG) an optical imaging agent which is administered to patient during surgical procedure.
- In March 2018, according to paper, "Smartphone-assisted minimally invasive neurosurgery", published in Journal of Neurosurgery, Mauricio Mandel, MD & colleagues from Sao Paulo, Brazil has described smartphone as endoscopic device for use in minimally invasive surgery. These device is efficient, cost effective and easy to use. These device provides a great learning tool for less experienced neurosurgeons. Smartphone is small and light-weight and thus gets easily attached to endoscope by means of adapter, its high definition image help in providing an excellent view of surgical site, it provides recording video, storage, and used for review and teaching purpose.
Analyst View:
The key factor driving the growth of the Neuroendoscopy market is rising prevalence of neurological disease, rise in minimally invasive surgeries and technological advancement. Additional use of endoscope assisted microneurosurgery can be an advantage for gaining better overview within hidden corners of ventricular system. Neuroendoscopy is performed because it causes minimal damage to normal structures, helps in achieving excellent outcomes and carries a lower rate of complications. With ongoing technological development of endoscopic instruments & advanced surgical techniques will allow endoscopic surgery to expand beyond intra-ventricular, skull base lesions to intraparenchymal brain lesions. However, training programs for young neurosurgeons in institutes is highly recommended to make neuroendoscopy a routine in modern neurosurgical practice and thus, expected to boost the target market growth over the forecast period. As a result, market competition is intensifying, and both big international corporations and start-ups are vying to establish position in the market.
