What are Some Good Applications of Water-Soluble Thread?
The water-soluble thread has some incredible uses that can help your business become more productive at manufacturing garments and other products.
Applications of water-soluble thread
- Basting - Basting is often necessary for manufacturing quilts and blankets. Water-soluble thread can baste the quilt top to keep it in place and then melt when washed or scrubbed with a wet brush.
- Trapunto - Water-soluble threads can secure the first layer of batting for trapunto. You can wash or spray it with water and brush off the thread when done.
- Keep small embroidery designs in place - Small designs tend to shift in a large embroidery hoop. You can baste them with water-soluble threads to prevent them from moving and brush or wash the stitches off to remove them.
- Stitch small pieces of wash-away stabiliser together - Minimise waste by using small portions of wash-away stabiliser in embroidery machines. Stitch them together with water-soluble thread. The threads will melt and disappear when washed or sprayed with water.
- Appliqué - This type of thread eliminates the need to backstitch at the start and end when applying an appliqué. Sewers can trace the shape of the appliqué on the fabric and sew along its lines, and remove the thread by pressing with steam or scrubbing with a wet brush.
Other uses
Water-soluble thread is also handy for matching striped and checkered fabrics, as well as other projects that involve difficult fabric matching. It can be used for pleat formation, line matching stitches, neckline and armhole gathering stitches, and temporary gathering stitches in footwear and accessories.
The best water-soluble thread
Coats Aquamelt water-soluble thread is completely soluble and dissolves when exposed to warm water, making it ideal for temporary stitching in denim, knitwear, woven garments, and footwear. It is made of polyvinyl alcohol and is specifically designed to replace traditional basting or tacking threads used in apparel manufacturing. This thread is also suitable for use in the production of footwear and accessories.
Aquamelt has several advantages, including not leaving any residue after a wet treatment, which eliminates the deposition of stains and saves time and money by preventing fabric damage and eliminating the need to remove temporary stitches sewn with regular thread. Additionally, this thread provides a clean seam finish without loose or untrimmed threads. Aquamelt also complies with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® CLASS I.
