Caffeine and the Caffeine ELISA Kit

Author: Alex Howard

As familiarized by all scientific staff, the

ELISA is a test usually used to identify a

substance by using antibodies and color change

.The Caffeine ELISA Kit kit is for the

quantitative and/or qualitative screening of

Caffeine in water, urine, and saliva samples.

To understand the Caffeine ELISA Kit, there

is a need to talk about the Caffeine.

1. Is the Caffeine common?

Actually, we are familiar with Caffeine, for

it can be easily found in our life. It is said

that it is discovered in over sixty plants,

such as coffee beans, tea leaves, etc.

Therefore, you cannot say you never get in

touch with it. you might drink coffee to get

rid of tiredness and weariness, ; you taste a

cup of green tea in the pleasant Sunday

afternoon, or enjoy a bar of chocolate in

leisure time, drain a bottle of soda or energy

drinks after running, and jelly beans, gums

for the young people, etc.; almost all of us

use caffeine in one form or another in our

life.

Not only in daily life, Caffeine is also used

in medical field. Usually, it is added to

certain medications, like pain killers, aiming

to strengthen the medicine effectiveness. It

can also be used for the treatment of Migraine and headaches or breathing problems of babies.

2. What the effect of Caffeine is?

According to The Food and Drug Administration

(FDA) in US, caffeine is both a drug and a

food additive. Although it is the most

commonly used drug in the world, excessive

caffeine intake can also cause health problems

and side effects on our bodies despite of the

benefits it brings in our daily life.

As a matter of fact, Caffeine is a central

nervous system stimulant, and a excessive

caffeine consumption of can lead to relatively

long term complications, whether it is

consumed in food or as a medicine. Take the

coffee as an example, if you drink more than

500 to 600 mg (around 6 cups of brewed coffee)

a day may cause side effects on your body.

You may have symptoms such as nervousness,

concentrating difficulty, muscle tremors, high

blood pressure, fast heart beat, stomach

upset and irritability, insomnia, dependency,

etc.

Once consumed, an effect that may begin as

early as 15 minutes and can last for as long a

s six hours. You can imagine how crazy you are

when you cannot sleep every night.

To prevent side effects it takes, you need be

careful in life. If you are seeing doctors for

being depression, anxiety or insomnia, heart

problems, high blood pressure or kidney

disease, you should avoid the excessive

caffeine consumption. If you are pregnant, or

planning to become pregnant, you need

eliminate caffeine or limit intake to

200-300 mg per day.

3. How the Caffeine ELISA Kit test?

After the introducing of Caffeine, this part

is about the biological test. It is a direct

competitive ELISA which is based on the

recognition of Caffeine by specific antibodies

. Caffeine, when present in a sample, and a

Caffeine

  • HRP analogue compete for the binding sites

of mouse anti-Caffeine antibodies in

solution.The Caffeine antibodies are then

bound by a second antibody

(goat anti-mouse) immobilized on the wells of

the microtiter plate.

After a washing step and addition of the

substrate solution, a color signal is

generated. The intensity of the blue color

is inversely proportional to the concentration

of Caffeine present in the sample. The color

reaction is stopped after a specified time

and the color is evaluated using an ELISA

reader. The concentrations of the samples are

determined by interpolation using the standard

curve constructed with each run.
