Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has stood up in support of teammate Alejandro Garnacho after the 19-year-old was accused of using social media posts with potential racial connotations. Garnacho posted a picture with himself and teammates celebrating Onana's penalty save against Copenhagen by adding two gorilla emojis above it on X (formerly Twitter). Unfortunately, this post was quickly taken down.

Onana Defends Garnacho

Andre Onana of Manchester United rushed to defend Alejandro Garnacho over concerns that the teenager may face an FA ban following a social media post he uploaded celebrating after Cameroonian goalkeeper Savet saved an injury-time penalty during Tuesday night's Champions League win over FC Copenhagen, as well as two gorilla emojis included as caption. Unfortunately for Onana however, that post has since been deleted on X (formerly Twitter).

The FA has informed Garnacho of potential racial connotations with his posts and requested his observations. Garnacho has yet to respond; however, Onana posted a message in support of Garnacho on his Instagram Story Thursday evening.

Emoticons may seem harmless enough, but the FA has in the past punished players who use Spanish terms that could be perceived as offensive in the UK. Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three games and fined PS100,000 in 2020 for including "gracias negrito", which translates to "thanks little black", below an Instagram post from one of his friends.

Onana Insists No Further Action Should Be Taken

Matt Hargreaves, United's new head of negotiations, conducted an intensive analysis on Onana's contract. This included moving away from large basic contracts that can lengthen player careers while offering more incentives and add-ons.

Onana posted a picture with his teammates celebrating goalkeeper Tim Krul's penalty save in their Champions League group game win against Copenhagen and included gorilla emojis as part of its caption, before quickly deleting it after becoming aware of how it could be perceived by viewers. Football Association authorities have taken note of the incident and could charge Onana with breaking their guidelines regarding racially sensitive social media posts.

Onana arrived at the team hotel in New Jersey to be welcomed by Ten Hag and Morris as well as Sarica, his agent, signaling more rapid progress than last season when both players weren't announced until Carrington.

Onana Says He "Knew What He Was Doing"

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho may face action from the Football Association for using two gorilla emojis on social media posts regarding teammate Andre Onana. The 19-year-old Argentina international posted a picture celebrating Onana's crucial penalty save late on against FC Copenhagen with both gorilla emojis added above it - before realizing their potential racial implications and quickly deleted the post following being informed of them.

Garnacho, as a black player, may have breached FA guidelines on racially sensitive social media posts with his use of the emojis. Edinson Cavani was banned for three games from United after writing "Gracias Negrito" below a friend's Instagram post and using racist slurs against black people.

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song has come under scrutiny from fans after dropping goalkeeper Ifeanyi Udeze in their opening group match against Serbia. Udeze played at the 2002 World Cup for Nigeria and believes Song made the wrong call by not managing their top goalkeeper better in that opening group match against Serbia.

Onana Says "People Can’t Choose What I Should Be Offended By"

Andre Onana had a difficult start to his Manchester United career but made amends with an incredible penalty save against Copenhagen in Tuesday's Champions League tie. While Onana was celebrated by his team-mates after this impressive stop, 19-year-old winger Alejandro Garnacho posted an image that included two gorilla emojis on Twitter after celebrating Onana. Should Garnacho continue with such tweets containing offensive content he could face action from the Football Association under their social media guidelines which have rules regarding posts which could potentially break these regulations with regard to racism or offensive content being posted therein.

The teenager was informed by the FA that his post could be misconstrued, and after being informed he deleted it immediately after being informed by them. After being approached by both club and FA for comments about what could have been offensive comments from Garnacho's Instagram post he took to Instagram in support of him, and Onana expressed his feelings that people cannot choose what offends them: Garnacho means power and strength while these emojis can also be understood as symbols representing black culture that celebrate athletes of colour's achievements by using black culture to celebrate achievements that arises through athletic accomplishments of athletes of color.
