Understanding the Symptoms of Traction Control Problems in Your BMW

Author: Bay Diagnostic

Gone are the days when the driver had to manually initiate stabilization measures to keep the vehicle stable during difficult maneuvers. With the advancements in technology, modern cars have become intelligent; intelligent enough to automatically initiate stabilization measures. Today's blog post is about one such technology that new BMW models are equipped with – known as DTC.

Understanding BMW’s DTC…

DTC stands for Dynamic Traction Control… If it is to be put in a nutshell, DTC is a traction control mechanism that is entrusted with the task of ensuring optimal traction under tricky driving scenarios. It is basically a subsystem of Dynamic Stability Control or DSC and works just like any other traction control mechanism found in ordinary cars.

To prevent the vehicle from losing traction it essentially identifies the wheel that is spinning abnormally applies adequate braking force and controls the engine torque to that particular wheel so that the vehicle turns smoothly on slippery and uneven road surfaces. So, you can think of it as an advanced safety mechanism that ensures that your ride is safe – no matter the road conditions.

It is a very advanced system that works together with many subsystems and parts to accomplish the task assigned to it – the center of which is a control module. In addition to the control module, there are several other parts that play a vital role in ensuring that your BMW's DTC is performing at its best. If any one of these parts fails, the efficiency of the DTC will be significantly reduced.

Want to know what may go wrong with your BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control system? Well, the discussion below highlights some of the issues that may cause your vehicle's DTC to stop operating. Please take a look…

BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control: Why It May Malfunction?

Reason #1- Faulty sensor

The traction control system relies on a wide range of sensors to perform the task it is assigned – which is to prevent the vehicle from losing traction on uneven or rough road surfaces. For example, the wheel speed sensor provides the control module with necessary data about the speed at which the wheels are rotating. If there is something wrong with any of these sensors, not only will the DTC malfunction, but other systems that depend on this sensor will also malfunction.

Reason #2- Electrical issue

Power is required for major DTC system components to function. Be it the control module or sensor, components that have been helping the DTC to do the task it is entrusted with- need electric energy to function. If the power supply to those components is interrupted due to bad wires or damaged relays, it can cause the DTC to malfunction. Since the DTC is a part of the broader system known as the DSC - if it fails due to an electrical problem, other components under it will also suffer.

Reason #3- Flawed control module

At the heart of your BMW’s DTC is the control module. This is the part that determines at what speed your vehicle's wheels should rotate so you can drive without losing traction. If it malfunctions, your BMW’s DTC will give up.

BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control: Signs It Is about to Give Up

Modern cars are intelligent… Not only can they initiate a sequence of steps to ensure optimal traction, but they can also alert you to problems caused by mechanical or electrical malfunctions. If there is something off with the DTC, some of the signs that your BMW will give off include;

  1. Flashing of dashboard warning indicators such as DTC, ABS, etc…
  2. Appearance of unusual noises when braking or turning
  3. Losing traction even when the DTC is active
  4. Your BMW’s steering wheel will become stiff if its DTC is not functioning the way it should.
  5. Your BMW's anti-lock braking system may also stop working if its DTC is not working as it should.

BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control: What to Do If It Gives Up?

DTC is an important part of your BMW's DSC system. It is because of this system that you get to drive your vehicle smoothly and efficiently on an uneven and slippery road surface. If it occurs to you that there is something off with your BMW's Dynamic Traction Control system, don't take it for granted. Find out where exactly the problem lies and act accordingly.
