Support the Tide with Alabama Fan Gear
With 25 conference titles, more than 50 bowl games, and a long series of hall-of-fame coaches, it’s hard to believe that there might be people who aren’t fans of the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide. Those people aside, real Bama fans love to show their support, and one of the best ways to show the world you’re a die-hard enthusiast is with Alabama fan gear.
The University of Alabama
Located in the city of Tuscaloosa, the university was founded in 1831, making it one of the oldest in the state. The football team played their first game in 1892, but didn’t become known as the Crimson Tide until 1907, when a newspaper editor coined the name in a story about that year’s Iron Bowl, which was played out on a field of muddy red clay, staining Alabama’s white jerseys bright crimson. Many years later, in the 1930s, another sports writer referred to the Tide’s impressively large players as "elephants," thus creating the school’s mascot. During the 1940s and ‘50s, there was even a live elephant that was brought in to attend important games. Although the elephant became a beloved part of Alabama fandom, the mascot, known as Big A, was not officially adopted by the university until 1979. Last but not least, for more than 100 years, rain or shine, elephant or no elephant, the school’s legendary Million Dollar Band has been there to support the Tide at every home game.
