Journeying Into the World of Abstract Art

Abstraction in art, which began in the early 20th century, indicates a divergence from reality in the depiction of images. Abstract art is also known as non-figurative or non-objective or non-representational art. Abstract expressionism art is a newer form of abstract art that was developed in the mid 20th century by American painters. Its distinct style that is neither truly abstract nor expressionist is marked by freedom of technique and creates an impression of spontaneity. Notable collections of abstract paintings can be seen in many art galleries around the world.

The Sliding Scale of Abstract Art

Abstract painting images may deviate from accurate natural representation either completely, partially, or slightly. They may range from semi-abstract art to the wholly abstract ones. While the fully abstract art forms do not bear any resemblance to anything recognizable, figurative art is only partially abstract, in which the colors and forms are altered conspicuously. Fauvism and cubism are examples of partial non-representational art movements. Abstract art that is based on the use of geometric forms constitute geometric abstraction. This may seem completely disconnected from the real world at first glance and may appear to lack emotion.

Colors Mean More than What the Eye Can See

Colors rouse emotions in small and large abstract paintings and this is the foundation of abstraction in art. Moreover, abstract artists also believe that each color on an artwork has the tone of a musical instrument also. While green is peaceful with the sound of a middle -position violin, red arouses confidence and life with the sound of trumpets. Warmth and excitement are attributed to yellow with its myriad trumpet sounds. Dark blue sounds like a cello, while light blue sounds more like a flute. Blue color, whether light or dark, provokes depth and supernatural. The silence of white color denotes a pause in a pleasant melody.

Varied Types of Abstraction in Art

There are different types of non-representational art, some abstract and some expressionist. While curvilinear abstraction uses abstract motifs like knots, geometric abstraction is characterized by geometric shapes like circles, squares etc. Emotional or Intuitional abstract art evokes nature in less representational ways, like an abstract tree or scenery painting. The myriad pigments used in light or color-related abstraction make use of light or color respectively to detach the artwork from reality. In gestural abstract art, loose and rapid brush strokes are used. There are no external associations in minimalistic abstraction, in which nothing other than what is seen matters.
