Lack of sleep affects workers' productivity, but it also affects their attendance, because long-term sleep deprivation leads to more on-the-job and commute-time accidents and health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer's. Poor sleep patterns are becoming recognized by both doctors and employers as a public health risk – in one study conducted by the CDC on nearly 75,000 adults, over 35% reported getting fewer than seven hours of sleep a night, 40% reported falling asleep during the day at work, and 4.7% reported falling asleep or nodding off while driving to work.

Back in the early days of Silicon Valley, the "rule of thumb" for employers was "If your company parking lot is empty at midnight, your employees aren't working hard enough."
