Why Bootcamps are the way to go to improve your health and fitness

Before you read this article, I want you to dissociate any pre existing thoughts that come to mind when you hear the word "bootcamp". Thanks to television series like "The Biggest Loser", the lay public have a tendency to associate bootcamps with over the top, grueling and relentless forms of exercise that leave the participant fighting for their life! However, in actuality, this is not the case.

Over the past decade, bootcamps have been growing in popularity, and rightfully so. Gone are the days where to improve your fitness you needed to join a gym, jump on a treadmill and slave away for an hour or so or until you got so bored you would leave, which ever came first. This outdated methodology serves little purpose to anyone and thanks to an ever-increasing demand for fitness trainers; creativity has flourished and enjoyable forms of training have been established.

One of the beauties of bootcamps is derived from the essence of what they actually are. Bootcamps are essentially a combination of all things fitness meaning that you will rarely ever perform the same session more than once. Whether the sessions consist of cardiovascular conditioning, strength work, sprints, agility, balance and co-ordination drills or a combination of each component, one thingthat’s guaranteed is that you will not only have fun, but you will get your heart rate up, build up a sweat and leave them with a great sense of accomplishment.Bootcamps are not, and I repeat, are not about being yelled at by some under qualified fitness trainer who pushes each and every participant to the point of complete and utter exhaustion. If you find yourself in one of these environments, then you need to look elsewhere as soon as possible. Remember, exercise should be to stimulate, not to annihilate.

Unlike personal training sessions (which are great by the way), another beauty of participating in boot camps is the fact that you become part of a group. While this may not seem that advantageous initially as there may not be as much focus directed towards you, what you will soon discover is that by becoming part of a small training community, your accountability, your work ethic and your level of enjoyment will all begin to increase. As each of these increases, you will learn that being part of a fitness community is one of the best things you have ever done!

Whilst most of us have a tendency to continually let ourselves down with little remorse to follow, when it comes to letting others down, we become substantially more diligent. As we do not want to let others down, our attendance rate increases. By increasing our attendance, what we are doing is becoming consistent and with consistency comes results. This sequential flow is of monumental importance when it comes to fitness training as we all know that developing fitness is all about consistency.

So the next time you are sitting, twiddling your thumbs and contemplating whether or not boot camps are for you, maybe you should be asking yourself a different set of questions. Do you like having fun, socializing with people, learning and developing new skills, working within a team and improving your fitness, health and well being whilst doing so? Well if the answer is yes, then I’m going to unreservedly recommend that boot camps are for you!
