As its name itself tells that it changes the phase or the position of the cam shaft as per the requirement to improve the engine performance.

It is the camshaft which controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, by doing this, it controls the amount of fuel and air entering to the combustion chamber and the amount of exhaust gasses released out of the combustion chamber. Hence the cam phaser just adjusts the timing in such a way that the engine can run more with a less intake of fuel. It is the engine control unit or the car computer which controls the cam phaser. When there is correct time, the cam phasers get the signals to make the adjustment of the camshaft timing. The VVT system consists of a solenoid which gives pressure to the cam phaser so that it would be activated and to make the solenoid work, the VVT gets the signals from the PCM.
Importance of cam phaser and how dangerous to use faulty
The cam phaser acts in correct times to adjust the timing and bring a change in the performance. In older cars there were no cam phasers so the fuel efficiency was not that much good as the fuel is not conserved. The cam phaser conserves the power and provides the best performance it can. The cam phaser is controlled by PCM to make a change in the control valve.
The valves at the cylinders open and close to control the fuel and the air amount in engine. When the valves close, flow of the air and fuel is stopped, when the valves open, then fuel and air flow into the chambers. Similarly, the opening and the closing of the exhaust valve can affect the intake. To have more power, the camshaft timing becomes slow and the slow timing can make the valves to remain open for long and allow more fuel and air into the chamber. When the timing is faster, the opening time of the intake valves is very less that’s why less fuel and air enters into the combustion chamber for one stroke and leads to less power. You cannot get such type of control if there is faulty or no cam phaser, a cam phaser is useful but can become faulty leading to some major engine performance issues, which should be avoided.
