'It's the perfect destination': Victoria Beckham scouts Hong Kong locations for new store

Victoria Beckham has revealed she is opening a store in Hong Kong, to the delight of her fans in the city and hot on the heels of the success of her London boutique.

In the midst of Art Basel, Beckham revealed to the South China Morning Post during an invitation-only talk hosted by this reporter that she was scouting locations in Hong Kong for her next retail shop.

"I would love my second worldwide store to be in Hong Kong, so I’m here also looking at space and speaking to all my retail partners," she said at the talk, held at the Upper House and as part of the Liberatum Cultural Festival.

"It just makes sense for this to be my next 'home', and by that I don't mean I'm going to move here," she laughs, realising she's set off a murmur of excitement across the room.

"I say things like that and suddenly people are asking about when I'm moving to Hong Kong. But I do want to spend a lot of time here, there's such an energy and it's such an exciting place to be, I want to bring the kids here."

The region, she said during the talk, is the fastest growing for her business.

"I find that the more that I travel the world, the more I meet Chinese customers," Beckham said. "So Hong Kong is the perfect destination. Even though my potential customer is a woman who travels a lot, I want to get directly to her. I really feel like now is the right time."

Looking sharp in a chic black tuxedo jacket thrown over a slinky top, cigarette pants and leopard print heels, Beckham sported a new look in aviator glasses.

The London-based fashion designer and former Spice Girl was jetting through Hong Kong for a series of events, before flying off to Beijing to judge the Woolmark Prize.

"I was at the amfAR (The Foundation for Aids Research) Gala," she says of the star-studded event at Shaw Studios on the 14th March.

"I’ve recently been made a UN Aids ambassador, so I was really excited to be here supporting the first Asian gala."

In September last year, her first flagship, designed by architect Farshid Moussavi, opened on Dover Street, London to much fanfare. And in the not too distant future, a Hong Kong store under her belt would seriously amp up Beckham’s global reach.

She is already one of the most photographed women in the world and a style icon to boot, with a huge global following, including in Greater China.

But with the award winning high fashion label she started in 2008, Beckham has managed to shift focus onto her designs, aesthetics and business prowess, rather than just her very famous family.

With Beckham’s star power and a label characterised by a cool, sleek sophistication so favoured by modern, well-heeled Hong Kong women – the move would be a symbolic as well as commercial statement.
