How to take care of your contact lenses?

Author: Mary Fernandes

Contact lens is a thin film which is curved and is worn in the eye just in front of the film of tears which cover the eye surface. These lenses are usually transparent but are also available in various colors based on the consumer’s requirements.

Contacts are not only used for replacing the prescription eyeglasses but with their colored version, they are also used to make a fashion statement. These lenses whether colored or transparent, are available in hard and soft versions. However most of the lens users today have moved to the soft ones.

However, this foreign body that goes into your eye needs to be taken care of very well. It is very important to follow a specific series of steps in order to take proper care of the lenses so that they remain clean and disinfected.

Here is a sequence of pointers that should be considered while rinsing, cleaning and in turn disinfecting the contact lens:

  1. Before you start cleaning the contact lenses, it is very important to make sure that your hands are clean. For this, you should use a non-cosmetic soap to wash and rinse your hands. Additionally, the soap should not contain any oils or perfumes as they might get transferred onto the lenses once you start cleaning them. Once you wash your hands clean, dry them on a towel that is lint free.
  2. Now, remove one lens and rub it clean in your palm, using the recommended solution. Make sure that your nails are short so that they do not scratch the lens while you are rubbing them clean.
  3. Then, do this lens rinsing one more time to remove all the loose debris.
  4. Post this, you can either wear this lens or place it in its case with a fresh rinsing solution in it.
  5. Repeat the steps 2 to 4 for the other lens too.

However, this care is not enough. Sometimes, even though you have a clean pair of contacts, you may find itchiness in your eyes after wearing the contacts irrespective of whether they are colored contact lenses or transparent ones. This happens due to the protein deposited by your eyes on the contacts and this amount of deposition varies from person to person.

Even if this protein deposition occurs, you don't have to replace the contact lenses with a new one. What you could do instead is simply clean them with a protein remover.

There are a wide range of products in the market that can help you clean your pair of colored contact lenses as well as the usual contact lenses. Some of these are: Hydrogen peroxide solution, cleaning and disinfecting devices, a daily cleaner for contacts or even a multipurpose solution which does cleaning, disinfecting as well as rinsing.

However, it is very important to pick up the right product that suits your contacts and follow the right care measures which in turn will help enhance your vision as well as your personality.

If you wish to get rid of eyeglasses or wish to change your eye color to enhance your personality, the option of using colored contact lenses is just great.
