Motivating the audience beyond self-empowerment

Author: Ryan Holliday

Motivational speakers have the unique ability to empower people with their words, insights, and stories. However, for empowerment to have lasting effects, it needs to translate to action and an enabling to exercise change for the better. Motivation beyond self empowerment should always be the goal of inspirational speaking. Otherwise, its effects would only be short-lived.

A speech that raises the audience's self confidence is a good example of a motivational effort that goes beyond empowerment. The new confidence that audiences gain will compel them to work harder and perform at a higher level than they did in the past. This is true regardless of who the target audience may be. The more empowered students or workers become, the more confident and enabled they will feel, which will in turn encourage them to explore new and more creative ways to increase their efficiency and productivity in their endeavors.

A speech that encourages contentment is also one of the best kinds of motivational speeches that can have lasting effects beyond empowerment. When people are empowered, they feel a greater sense of contentment in their current state, while also pushing them to aim bigger. This contentment does not necessarily mean being too at ease in where they stand in the company or in their academic career, but being content with what they can do, knowing that they have the potential to be better and to grow, without taking shortcuts or stepping on others to get higher.

Motivational speeches that emphasize the audience's value are also the most effective types of empowerment speeches. When people know that their value is appreciated, they are compelled to do above and beyond what is expected and required of them. Empowered employees, for instance, show better work habits when the management knows how to recognize their value to the organization. Students and the youth on the other hand, are compelled to prove themselves more and make themselves better, when told their value.

In any assembly or conference call, motivational speeches that touch upon team building and unity also go beyond empowerment, allowing audiences to see the value of working together to achieve common goals. Empowered people who know how to recognize the value of teamwork and unity are also people who are empowered to do their part in the cause and encourage others to perform their duties in the most productive way.
