Student Issues and Problems That Should be Talked About in Motivational Assemblies and Speeches
The school environment ought to be a safe haven where young students can seek personal development, social acceptance, and educational enrichment. However, inherent challenges and issues that affect student behavior are inevitable, which disturbs the peace and hinders harmonious learning and meaningful experiences within school settings. While inevitable, these issues shouldn't be left unaddressed and should in fact be a major concern that schools and institutions must seek to eliminate or at least lessen so that students can have more peaceful, safer, and healthier learning experiences during their formative years. The following are only some of the main issues plaguing society and schools that should be addressed during school assemblies and motivational programs:
- Violence – Cases of school shootings and similar types of violence are ever on the rise in the last 5 years, replacing ringing school bells with gunshot blasts, followed by fearful screams and wails of students and teachers. Violence can stem from very deep seated issues that should definitely be addressed before student-initiated shootings and other violent incidents become more and more commonplace.
- Bullying – Cyber, physical, and otherwise, bullying continue to be a major issue in school settings. The new brand of bullying brought about by the advent of new technology and social media is said to cause even worse effects on cyber bullied children due to the public and uncontrollable nature of these social venues. According to the CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention) there is an alarming rise in suicide rates in young people, accounting to more than 4,400 annual deaths of kids and young people between 10 and 24. Teachers, parents, and school administrations play a very critical role in teaching compassion and acceptance to children so that these incidents can be lessened and prevented altogether.
- Drugs and Alcohol – According to the CDC, substance use and abuse are among the major issues affecting students and statistics are only expected to rise without proper intervention.
- Unplanned Pregnancy – Teen pregnancy is also a continuing problem in many schools, and something that has been brushed off as an inevitable societal issue. It is also a problem that costs taxpayers at least $11 billion each year in health and foster care, among many related expenses. According to CDC, only half of all teen mothers are able to get their high school diploma.
