Ready Made Pools Explained: How to Judge a Fiberglass Shell Before It Reaches Your Site
Ready made pools have changed how many Indian homeowners and resorts think about a swimming pool. Instead of months of on-site concrete work, a factory-made shell arrives on a truck and is set in place in weeks. But the speed hides an important fact: the quality of a ready made pools project is decided in the factory, long before the shell reaches your site. Once it’s in the ground, you can’t see inside the laminate.
That makes it worth understanding what you are actually buying.
What a fiberglass shell is made of
A readymade shell is not one material but several layers, built up inside a mould:
- Gelcoat: the smooth, coloured surface you see and touch. It gives the finish and the first protection against water and chlorine.
- Barrier coat: a layer directly behind the gelcoat, often made with vinylester resin. It resists water slowly passing into the laminate, which over years can cause small blisters (osmosis).
- Structural laminate: layers of glass fibre and resin that give the shell its strength. Their number, thickness and fibre type decide how stiff the walls are.
- Reinforcement: ribs, a stiffened top edge (bond beam) and sometimes core materials in the floor and walls.
Two shells with the same shape and colour can differ in all four layers. That’s why price alone is a poor guide.
Questions to ask the manufacturer
Before you order a readymade swimming pool, ask for these in writing:
- The laminate schedule: the layers used, their sequence and the total wall thickness.
- The resin types: especially whether a vinylester barrier coat is used behind the gelcoat.
- The shell weight: for the same size, a much lighter shell usually means less laminate.
- The warranty split: how long the structure is covered versus the surface finish, and what is excluded.
- Installation conditions: what base, backfill and groundwater measures the warranty requires. Many warranties are void if the shell is installed differently.
A manufacturer who answers these clearly is usually confident in their product.
Readymade or prefabricated: is there a difference?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but a prefabricated swimming pool can also mean a modular system: panels of steel, polymer or concrete assembled on site, then lined. A one-piece fiberglass shell and a panel-built pool behave differently:
- One-piece shells have no joints in the water-holding surface, but their size is limited by what can be transported by road.
- Panel systems can be larger and shipped in pieces, but every joint and the liner become points to maintain over time.
When comparing quotes, confirm which kind is being offered. The words on the brochure won’t always tell you.
What to check on delivery day
The shell should be inspected before it is lifted into place, while every surface is still visible:
- Cracks and crazing: look closely at corners, steps and the top edge for hairline cracks or star-shaped crazing in the gelcoat.
- Air voids: tap the walls gently with a coin. A hollow, different sound in one patch can mean a void in the laminate.
- A level bond beam: the top edge should be straight and even. Twists show up later as an uneven waterline.
- Fittings: skimmer, inlet, light and drain openings should match the agreed drawing.
- Serial number: check it matches the invoice and warranty card.
Photograph everything, and sign the delivery note only after the inspection. Damage found after installation is much harder to prove and to repair.
One feature to ask about: groundwater protection
In areas with a high water table, an empty fiberglass shell can be pushed upward by groundwater, a problem known as hydrostatic lift. Many installations include a hydrostatic relief valve or a drainage point under the floor for this reason. Ask whether your site needs one, and never drain a fiberglass pool fully without professional advice.
The takeaway
A readymade pool saves time on site, but only if the shell itself is well made. Ask for the laminate details, confirm what kind of pool you are buying, and inspect the shell before it goes into the ground. Those three steps protect the investment for years.
