Self Catered or Catered Ski Chalets – The Great Debate
Ski holidays are as popular as ever, but among the die-hard skiers and snowboarders there are those that swear by two very different means of accommodation. Some prefer to indulge in a week at a catered chalet, while others prefer to go it alone and self cater. Which one is the best way to go and what are the advantages and disadvantages, if any, of the two different kinds of ski holidays?
Go Catered
Catered ski chalets are offered by many different companies and are designed to suit all budgets. Even the most basic will provide comfortable accommodation, breakfast, an afternoon teacake (or similar) and a three course evening meal. Many offer other services too, such as en suite facilities, boot fitting in the chalet, transfers to the slopes and a nanny service. There is no doubt that this kind of accommodation has many advantages, and once you've paid for the holiday there is very little else to worry about. Hosts are there to look after you and on hand to answer any questions and deal with any requests you might have. They also have a wealth of knowledge about the ski area and local town, too, which can be useful if you are a first timer.
Many catered ski chalets are run by companies that also include lift passes in the initial cost. They may also help you pre-book lessons, nannies and other services. In fact there are very few disadvantages of renting catered ski chalets, apart from possibly the fact that as you have paid for food you are less likely to get out and about in the evening and try the local restaurants. If this isn’t an issue for you, however, there's no disadvantage.
Do it Yourself
Although catered ski chalets have plenty of advantages, going self-catered can also offer plus points. It means that you can come and go as you please, eat when you want, and use the kitchen to make packed lunches, too. Being more independent means you'll have the opportunity to try out the local eateries and you don’t have to be back for dinner at a certain time. If you are just a couple or a small group, self-catering is easy, but larger groups might benefit from choosing a catered option, as everything is organised.
When going it alone, provisions can be bought from local supermarkets and can work out cheaper if you are budget conscious.
Both ski holiday accommodation options have pluses and minuses, with each suiting different needs. Both, however, will ensure you have a wonderful, relaxing holiday on the slopes.
