Mould release agents are generally applied over mould surface for seamless removal of composite part out of the mould and prevent stick ups. These can be brushed, sprayed or wiped onto the mould surface. Few of these agents can be left on while for others it is necessary to wipe off after composite part is removed. In the following sections let us have a detailed look at these release agents.

Types of Release Agents

Normally there are 5 types of such release agents, let us look at them here:

  1. PVA: PVA or Polyvinyl Alcohol is a clear liquid of red or blue color and after drying it creates a plastic film that covers mould’s surface. PVA is generally utilized in situation where release could cause problems.

  2. Wax Systems: Such wax systems are or liquid or paste form and contain carnauba wax as well as other synthetic or natural waxes. These are utilized in various wet lay processes as well as in cure processes in ambient temperature.

  3. SPPS: SPPS or Semi Permanent Polymer Systems are also known as polymer release agents. These are developed with the help of polymeric resins which are dissolved in any solvent.

  4. Hybrid System: These hybrid systems consist of combination of polymer and wax.

  5. Internal Release Additives: These additives are normally incorporated into dough as well as sheet moulding compounds.

Features of These Mould Release Agents

Some of the most notable features of these release agents include:

  • Very good release properties along with quick de-moulding.

  • These are useful for application in compound moulding cycles.

  • Improved wall slippage, reduction in fouling and better mould flow.

  • Silicone based agents are in aqueous emulsion form which is easier to handle as well as apply.

  • The other feature of these release agents is that they have excellent stability in terms of freeze thaw and do not result in severe oiling or creaming.

  • They also offer optimal dilution stability which means adequate concentration can be utilized without any waste.

  • These are easy to apply by way of dipping, brushing and spraying even in case of very complex moulds.

  • Such agents have low surface tension as well as simple wetting properties over mould surface.

  • These are also quite economical since only small quantities are needed for every release.

  • The film that forms is generally heat stable as well as durable.

  • The mould release agents are also chemically inert and do not effect moulding substance or the mould itself.

  • These also have very low volatility thereby there is no smoke or fume to bear. Additionally, these are non toxic and to do release any fumes.

  • It is also possible to adjust product viscosity as per requirement of the task.
