Performance Concept Release Should Encourage More Drivers to Buy Subaru BRZ Models

As if you needed any greater incentive to buy Subaru BRZ models, the company has just released a BRZ STi Performance concept. For several years the possibility of a turbocharged Subaru BRZ for sale, has been an aspiration for many Subaru enthusiasts. While the Japanese manufacturer has been very quiet on the subject, they have now decided to showcase this particular variant at the New York Auto Show.

The Concept:

Although many speculate that this performance concept is not likely to be available as a Subaru BRZ for sale in showrooms anytime soon, it is possible that it may influence the next generation model. The concept features a race bred, high output turbocharged 2.0 litre boxer engine. This engine is currently in use for the BRZ GT300 Subaru race car, competing in the Japanese Super GT series. The output for this engine is estimated at 225 kW of power and 450 Nm torque.

It is rumoured that the engine will be undergoing durability tests for the racing series, so it is possible that a production version may feature in a future model available to buy. Subaru BRZ models will continue with the 2.0 litre Boxer engine until further notice. The current normally aspirated engine delivers 147 kW of power and 205 Nm of torque.

The potential Influence for Subaru BRZ Sale Models:

The BRZ is considered to be the showcase of "engineering prowess" and "STI tuning capability" featuring body, air intake, exhaust and chassis systems used on the performance sub brand. The changes to the chassis include suspension adjustments and further body stiffening. There are also other body changes including a large carbon fibre rear wing and aggressive front bumper. There are also interior changes including high tech steering wheel featuring integrated ignition button and shift indicator light. The model also features bucket seats, Race Widget telemetry and red trim highlights.

Will the Concept Affect the Standard Buy Subaru BRZ models?

Michael McHale, corporate communications manager for Subaru of America, spoke on behalf of Yoshiro Hirakawa, STI president at the event. McHale was vague about the possibility of the concept becoming a production model but hinted that it could become a reality in the future. The challenge involved would be how changes under the bonnet in the compact and tight BRZ engine bay would affect balance and feel. McHale acknowledged that people have expressed an interest in the BRZ having more power but the company has to balance consumer demand with financial feasibility.

While it is unlikely that the performance concept will affect the current range of Subaru BRZ for sale models, it should generate renewed interest in the brand, encouraging more enthusiasts to buy Subaru BRZ variants.
