Furniture care during Monsoons

Author: Brian Anthony

Monsoons provide the much needed respite from the simmering Indian summer. However for all of its cooling effect, thundering rains play spoil sport when in direct contact with your wooden furniture. This occurs because monsoons bring along a higher humidity content in the weather hence wood furniture that is not properly protected runs the risk of serious damage. The following are some tried and tested tips you can bank on to ensure your decor is well cared during this period.

Investing in a dehumidifier:

Possession of a large number of high grade vintage wooden furniture’s does pose a challenge during the rains. Your best option for safeguarding is by installing a dehumidifier during this high season.

Applying a coat of wax:

Moisture results in mold and mildew something that owners dread seeing on their prized wood pieces. A good precaution is applying a coat of graded wax that not only provides a smart sheen to the unit but also protect it from water. High humidity also provides the perfect environment for termites, so do get your furniture treated by an expert. A more economical way to go about this would be signing up for an annual maintenance contract with a reputed company which would ensure a no-pest zone as far as your furniture is concerned.

Caring for Wrought Iron furniture

Along with wood, many houses also have some wrought iron furniture. To protect this from rusting during rains oxidizing of the outer layer is the best solution.

Leather furniture

Leather when exposed to moisture also tends to lose its sheen and if not properly cared for will result in the formation of mildew. In the first place it’s well advised to keep it as dry as possible and purchasing the leather furniture from a good trusted brand. I am suggesting this as good brands will have the safety caps in place to ensure molds and mildew is not formed. However on finding them one should first clean the furniture with a damp cloth to remove dust and stains and then immediately wipe it to remove any of the remaining stains. The market also has leather conditioners will allow you to self-maintain the leather.

As monsoons pick up momentum it would be wise to keep the room well ventilated to reduce the humidity. If there is any particular product that you want to know how to care, do let us know we would love to assist.
