Tips on Properly Sealing your Packages with Carton Sealing Tape
Whether you’re planning on a move and need something that can hold your belongings, or you’re shipping items to different parts of the country, you can rely on cardboard boxes to do the best job in protecting your items from damage. They wouldn’t be as effective, however, if they are not properly sealed with carton sealing tape. Regardless of your purpose for cardboard boxes, here are some tips to ensure maximum protection for your items.
Choosing the Best Carton Sealing Tape
Generally, there are two factors you have to consider when choosing among the carton sealing tapes available in the market: namely, the tape’s strength or thickness and the material the tape is made of. For starters, you’ll need light-duty or utility-grade tape if you have a box that weighs 20 pounds or less, while you might need extra-heavy-duty or premium-grade tape if your box is more than 50 pounds.
Carton sealing tapes may be made of acrylic, natural rubber, or hot melt, each being pressure-sensitive (i.e., can stick to a box simply by pressing it). Acrylic is typically advised for storage, while hot melt is most suitable for shipping. There are also other types of tapes that are made of acrylic and provide the strength of hot melt variants.
Securing the Box
The way you seal your package is as important as the strength of the box you chose. This is why you cannot use just any kind of tape available, as some types can only make it easier for the box to fall apart. To begin sealing your package, first use carton sealing tape to tape up the bottom of the box by folding in the shorter sides and then the longer ones. Place the tape along the center, extending over each side of the box by about five centimeters, then repeat the process if necessary.
After securing the bottom, fill the cardboard box with all the items you need to pack or ship, while ensuring that there’s also ample protection inside. Once the box has been filled, repeat the process of taping, now at the top of the box. Remember to tape a strip of tape down the center of the box and one for each side.
