Yercaud is a hill station situated at an altitude of 1,500 metres. Though it is a lesser-known hill station compared to other South Indian hilly region but its beauty is no less than Kodaikanal or Ooty. Yercaud lies in the Shevaroys range in the Eastern Ghats and Servarayan temple is its highest point which stands at an altitude of 5,326 feet. Yercaud lies in the busy Saleem district but this beautiful hill town has its own charm. It is also known as the Jewel of the South and it enjoys a salubrious climate throughout the year. Yercaud is surrounded with lush vegetation and its name means the Lake Forest. Teak, sandalwood, silver oaks and coffee plantations are very common here. How to reach:
Both Saleem Airport and Saleem railway junction are at a distance of 38 km and it happens to be the nearest. Another major airport is Trichirapalli which is 165 km away. It takes only 45 mins to reach Yercaud from Saleem town. Taxis, auto rickshaws and rented cars are available outside the airport and railway station as well. For sightseeing also hire a car or auto rickshaw and explore the beauty of the little town. Even, few of the hotels offer accommodation for sightseeing. Due to its healthy climate, Yercaud can be visited anytime of the year. The scorching sun will not affect you as the area is relatively cool.
The Servaroyan Temple is a must place to visit. The temple is situated on the top of the Servaroyan Hill and this point offers a beautiful panoramic view of the town and plains below. The temple is actually a narrow cave where God Servarayon and Goddess Kaveri ( Kaveri River) is worshipped.
