Garjia Devi - beautiful temple on the top of a cliff

Ramnagar is a small town in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The city is the gateway to the famous Jim Corbett National Park. Ramnagar also houses the very famous Garjia Devi Temple. Goddess Parvati is worshipped in a different avatar in different parts of the country. Here, in Ramnagar, she is worshipped as Garjia Devi, Daughter of the Himalayas.

Garjia Devi Temple is located about 15 km away from Ramnagar, on the way to Ranikhet. The temple is situated on the top of a cliff and the River Kosi flows in front of the temple. The mythological tale says, that the area was covered with dense forests and Devi moved to its present location during a heavy flood in River Kosi. Lord Shiva witnessed her floating over the water and requested Devi to stay there. Later, the villagers found her idol on the top of the cliff and a temple of Garjia Devi was built. You have to climb stairs to reach the main temple. Apart from Gajia Devi, Baba Bhairon, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvaati are also worshipped here. Devotees have to take a bath in the holy Kosi River before offering puja as it is believed to clean all the sins of a person.
